LloydsTsb Lost my Cheque

I'm not sure if this is the correct place for this, but here goes.....
My grandmother in the USA died late last year and my uncle sent both me and my daughter a US$ cheque for the amount of 2000$.

I paid both cheques in on the same day mine into my santander account and my daughters into her Lloyds account, (Lloyds customer services checked with other depts 1st because its a childs account)

Almost 3 months later I go to Lloyds to check my daughters account and the money was never paid in

After alot of different phone calls I find out they have lost the cheque so I make a formal complaint and get told by the branch in question (Walsall town centre Julie Tolley) that they will sort it out...No joy after a week I get a compensation offer of £25 I refuse, go back to the branch and speak to someone else (Jackie Brown) who tells me she will try to resolve the issue

Now I visit the branch again Talk to Julie Tolley who assures me that they will resolve the issue, ...No joy.

I call the bank numerous times the following week to speak to Julie Tolley or Jackie Brown and get told they are at different places, I am then given an (internal number for customer relations 08456046761), i get told off for calling this number but the lady on the phone (Rosanne) assures me they will investigate and call me back

I get a call back (Lara) who explains that there is nothing more they can do and that the cheque was not like real money anyway it's just a piece of paper and that I need to contact my uncle and get him to send another cheque (not easy as he lives in Boston USA and when I call I get voicemail) Lara then tells me they will offer £100 comensation I refuse

She tells me they will make 1 final offer in the post after its been escalated....No letter so I call Lara back again she explains that the final offer will be £300 comensation I refuse explaining that all I want is the value of the cheque deposited into my 6 year old daughters account.

Lara tells me there is nothing more they can do, so I obtain the email address of the CEO Eric Daniels, Chief Executive from http://www.connectotel.com/marcus/ceoemail.html
Email him explaining the details, No response so I call the number on that site (020 7626 1500) no one takes the call I leave a message I get called back by a lady who explains that there is nothing more they can do and says the offer of £300 still stands
Can anyone please tell me if my next move is the ombudsmen or newspapers or what? Pretty please as it's my 6 yr old daughter who is missing out
BTW at no point in any of my contact with these people did I ask for compensation, they have offered and I have refused

Can your uncle not draw another cheque?

He will be able to see from his account statements that the current one was not cashed, his bank will cancel it to ensure it can't be cashed, and you'll have your $2000.00 plus #300.00 compensation.

    Everyone wins :o

I'm surprised they offered you £300 for a lost cheque, they never did when I worked for a high street bank! I would bite their hand off and get your uncle to replace the lost cheque.

Cheques do occasionally get lost and unfortunately it is usually down to the payee to contact the drawer for a duplicate. You are never going to get the $2000 credited to your daughters account without replacing the cheque.
    :p

Personally I'd take the £300 and run. You are incredibly 'lucky' to be offered that sum in the first place. Yes you've had to do a lot of chasing but still...! There is no way you are going to get the value of the cheque when there is no physical cheque any more.

Get your uncle to send another cheque, or better still use an international money transfer to save the hassle. It all depends on the charges involved.

Be warned though that some foreign cheques are paid on a collection basis which means you won't receive payment until the cheque is sent back to the US, and the bank the cheque is drawn on pay LTSB. This can take 6-8 weeks sometimes. Are you sure it has been 3 months or does it just feel like it?

The FOS won't entertain you unless you have a final response from LTSB - do you have this in writing? I can't see them upholding your complaint in a million years though if what you want is the value of the missing cheque.

I hope the FOS will tell you that when a cheque is deposited (especially a foreign cheque) that in the event of it being lost in transit then you should not lose out financially.
In this case you are quids up! They will tell you what most on here are telling you - get in touch with uncle and get a new cheque,
THE FOS will definitely not tell the bank to credit your daughter's account with the missing cheque.

Take the £300 and get the uncle to cancel and re-issue the cheque.

It's honestly not worth the bother of pursuing and it's going to be quicker and easier.

Thank you all for your advice I think I will accept their offer, my actual real issue was that they had never told me it was lost and it took me to go to a branch to find out, This is what I have explained to the Lloyds people all along if they had told me the week after it was deposited I could have sorted it out pretty easily
    Thanks again for the advice:j

    Good redress payment offered.

Ask to speak with the Local Directors office of your branch on the number you have got, if you want to take it further about it being lost..
Can I find out my credit score?
You do not have a single credit score or rating. Different organisations take different information into account when working out your credit score and may have different scores for different products. (Kindly from Experian)
