I think your claim that you can't contact your uncle is lame. There's a 5 hour time difference, do some math and work out when you can call him and catch him in. Or, if you keep getting his voicemail then, er, leave him a message!

If you don't think Uncle will believe you then try asking for a letter from Lloyds confirming that they have lost the cheque.

Lloyds have screwed up, recognised it, and offered very generous compo for your troubles.

The compo is nearly enough for you to fly to Boston and back, so you could go see dear old Uncle to get another cheque in person!
