From 17th February 2005 we will be upgrading all our customers’ connection speeds to fast 2Mb - for no extra charge! Soon you’ll be able to download online content so much faster!

    :D:D

Erm, did you read in my posting about this? I believe that they have halved the monthly allowance at the same time as doubling the speed!!

As for quality of service, I have been with Freedom2Surf for nearly a year with no problems, either, and so have several of my colleagues. I've seen no evidence that BT's service is any more reliable than anyone else's - you can't draw conclusions from a small sample of anecdotal evidence.

Does anyone know how I can check my connection speed

Everything you need to know should be on http://www.adslguide.org.uk.

I don't think they have halved the monthly allowance, I was notified back in July 2004 that my usage limit was 15Gb per month and according to the FAQ it will still be 15Gb after the upgrade. If you have a link where you read this please post it because if this is true I will certainly be complaining.

No ISP is perfect and personally speaking I don't think BT is any better or any worse than any other ISP. I have used Demon Internet, Freeserve, Pipex and various other ISPs in the past and BT for me is no worse than any of those, and far better than some.
I'm wondering if they've upgraded mine yet. I'm on BT Broadband 512k.
I think they said that they will email you before they upgrade you so you will probably find that you are still on 512Kb for now.

    Yes, here's a link: http://www.theregister.co.uk/2005/02/14/bt_upgrade/.

I wouldn't disagree that BT is no worse than anyone else; but I also wouldn't disagree that it is any better. Unfortunately though, it is not cheap, so you are paying more for no advantage.

Thanks for the link, that is a bit nasty for the people who are on the 1Mb service and I would imagine most of those will probably change to another ISP but it doesn't change anything for me as I am on the 512Kb service and have always known that the limit will be 15Gb.

Ah OK. It's a good example of BT's dishonest practices though - like increasing everyone's line rental by putting them all on BT Together Option 1 even if they never make a call via BT so will not benefit from it. This is marketed as something to save you money, and is BT's response to TalkTalk, call18866.com, et al - get you where these companies can't compete.

I have been with BT for 2 years and yes the ADSL service is good.

BUT. the way they treat customers is NOT GOOD.

As was said above they are halving the usage, that is not quite correct. At the moment there are NO usage limits but after the FREE upgrade you get a FREE cap to go with it.

Depending on what you pay you may get 2mb 1mb or 512Kbs speeds all for the same price depending on if your line can use the speed available, The difference in each service price is the capping, either 1, 15 or 30gig.

Very complicated as you can see, Oh nearly forgot! the other change is you have to pay on phone bill for new customers or requested upgrades.

Sorry my first post was a short "DO NOT TOUCH THEM WITH A BARGE POLE" type of message but I wanted to get the point over in a short and quick message.

As for the OP thanks for posting it, and please stick arround.

We do have real bargains here quite often, you just need to make sure it is one for you.

I am on the 1meg service and changing over to Zen Internet soon with no cap.
