And if it won't a member of staff that's on hand will always happily exchange them for new ones for you - or at least they always have done with me, or send you upstairs to the counter.

The counter is often closed or there is someone without their card / chequebook /ID wishing to withdraw money before me in the queue

HSBC instant deposit machines are notorious for rejecting notes , including notes dispensed from their own ATMs

(My comment does not relate to the Oxford Street /Tottenham Court Road branch)

Halifax and Nationwide instant machines are much better at accepting all notes

  • Am I missing something here with Lloyds TSB?

I've never used the letterbox type of deposit that does not give a receipt.. Would not use this for my own security.

I have always used an ATM if I don't wan't to wait.. Just plonk the card in, select Deposit and put the amount in.. Spits out an envelope and I just put the cash or cheques in and it takes it back.. It displays straight away on the account and the funds are available as stated within one day and gives you that important receipt.

I don't know if this has changed, but when I did have an account with HSBC a few years ago and they brought in these new style machines, I filled in the normal pre-printed paying-in slip but none of these would accept it...

Had to go over to the side and fill in another slip...

I have used the machines to pay in cheques (no slip required for cash)

I can't remember whether I brought my personalised paying in slips , although I have used the blank slips without problem

I can certainly recall that pre- printed bank giro credits for bill payments were rejected by the self service machine

When I first started working in the branch I do now, back in 1999 there were 14 members of staff covering the personal side. Now we are lucky to have half that amount.
  • I tend to avoid going into the branches and I hate calling them to confirm something has been done or asking for pending transactions. Only because they will only try and sell me something. Plus, I find it more convenient to bank online.
    DEBTFREE AND PROUD!!
  • Internet banking is good, but I still go into banks to put money into my debit accounts - out of habit I guess. Normally I use the counter, but the last few times have tried to use the machines.

My first attempt to use a machine to deposit cash (in Nationwide) was a nightmare of my own making. When told to insert the cash, I inserted the money into the wrong slot with some effort, only to then realise that was the slot where the money gets withdrawn from. In panic I went to the service desk and after checking the lady assured me that the money was tucked safely inside the safe. Fortunately they deposited the money into my account for me at the end of the day.

I think I use the branches more for assurance when withdrawing and depositing money from one bank to another.
