One one occassion a cheque paid into one of those secure boxes by me clearly stayed in there all day and indeed overnight without the secure box being looked at as my account showed it was entered up the next day.
So now (and because I need a bank receipt stamp on the paying in book) I queue up to pay in a cheque.
Not necessarily - it could have been removed from the box and placed in an in tray for someone to do next day0 -

There do seem to be limitations though - I once attempted to deposit a large (£2K or so) cheque and it said no can do - take it to the counter.0 -

HSBC certainly seems to be leading the way on coin sorters though !
Oh no, I can't stand those HSBC machines! I don't bank with them myself but occasionally have to pay in for other people. Don't know if it's the same everywhere but ours has one for cheques, one for notes and one for coins, so potentially have to queue at and pay into 3 different machines! I always leave there in a foul mood!!:rotfl:0 -

An (admittedly fairly minor) gripe with the HSBC ones is that the cheque doesn't hit the account until the day after you pay it in. I'm just spoilt by the Halifax ones, which accept cheques and cash, give a receipt with a picture of the cheque on, and credit the account immediately.0 -
So why didn't these people just use the machines rather than wasting time queuing and then complaining about it to the Daily Fail?
OPening more tills is a waste of money and a member of staff who could be doing something that genuinely couldn't be done equally well by a machine, like helping customers in the front office and generating actual income for the bank.
Juicy Jesus. The answer to your question
In the cases that I actually see for myself there are also Q's to use the machines! Which I expect was happening to the person in the report.
May be you have not noticed the banks are also laying off staff in retail banking section to give large bonuses to those at the top
and the gambling (sorry investment section )of the banks.
By" helping customers" do you mean like:-
When they did so much damage the taxpayer needed to bail them out? Or the PPI selling scandle or putting some of the old people into inappropreate investment?0 -
Most Halifax branches have Immediate Deposit Machines, which take notes and cheques, funds are credited immediately and the receipt gives you a copy of the cheque for your records.
No PIN is required either so you can even do it for your partner/friend/family member!0 -
Most former A&L Santander branches also have electronic cheque/ cash deposit machines.0

Could those who favour the use of machines for cheque deposit kindly tell us how they can argue with said machine if a receipt fails to materialise?0

Easy - go to the ATM, get a mini-statement.
If it's on there, fine.
If it's not, go and tell one of the staff in the branch. There will be a cheque in there with your name on it, so they'll be able to open the machine up and find it.0
