Sorry to hear about your problems. The main purpose of giving the Police your serial number is so they can identify it if they come across someone with it. They can then arrest the person in possession of it. If they have no serial number, they can't prove it's stolen and have to let the criminal walk away with it!

Every time a PC is plugged into the internet, the ip address is logged at the isp with the time, that info is available to the police, as is every email correspondent, website visited etc... The Ip address is directly linkable to an address. So, if the will was there, the police could find it.

Microsofts product authentication logs amongst other things the mac address of the ethernet card, to uniquely identify the PC, match that to the ip address, match the ip address to a broadband user, and you've got the criminal (or the new owner)... even if the windows was wiped, this would still work ( if the will was there from the authorities.)

Not sure about messenger, as I don't use it, but if it works in a peer to peer mode, directly communicating from one ip address (your friends), to another (the criminals), then when they connect to the internet, it will popup on your friends PC, and then you can use a sniffer, or tcpview, netstat to find out the ip address of the new owner, record the time, and again, if the will was there, the police could easily link this to a home address.. If it doesn't work in a peer to peer fashion, and communicates via Microsoft servers, then they would be able to track the ip. If you change your messenger password, then this method won't work.

The IP wont be traceable at all as when a PC moves form one exchange to another that will change the IP for sure, but even just connecting will change the IP anyway as it would be DHCP.

Messenger doesnt work like peer to peer anyway it communictes via the MS serververs then comes to a friend thats why contacts cant be deleted on MSN alone both parties have to remove the MSN info for the deletion to be successful.

Basically nothing with the IP will work at all, the best thing to do is create a crime report by going to the local police station and reporting the theft and asking about any CCTV in the area, and maybe check any local free ads papers for laptop sales is probably the local crack head who pinched it, I hope they get the b**gers.
  • The IP is always traceable by the authorities, whether dynamic or static.
Ever get the feeling you are wasting your time?

Its traceable but not  What I mean is its not worth anything as they have to prove who was using the IP at the time of any incident, especially true if multiple user accounts that why their are so few P2P prosecutions as all the evidence can be gathered but proving who was using said IP is the hard part.

The only problem with tracing an IP address is that you need the computer to identify itself to the ISP with a MAC code..... As routers come with thier own MAC code then unless they use the onboard lan and a USB modem ( I even think that the Modems now have thier own MAC)then the MAC will change as the wireless mac address will connect to the router then the router with its own MAC will connect to the ISP and shield the laptop from being identified...

Messenger or some other chat/email will be the only way because if messenger automatically signed into the OP account then the IP address would be logged for that session. Although getting info from MSN would probably be extremely difficult and still wont help you until you find out which ISP it belongs to and then send a legal request for the info.. The same goes with any mail sent as the IP is logged during this process as well.

Didnt the RIAA just celebrate thier 10000 prosecution about 6 months ago... If I remember correctly it is more down to you to prove you werent using it (like getting caught on speed cameras).
  • Unless they use wifi spots, It's trackable to an address, so who is using the laptop at the time is less relevant than who is in possession of stolen goods at that address. I'm talking from a purely technical standpoint, I know it won't get invetigated to that level.

Woooo 10000 prosecutions Vs how many use illegal activities on a PC isnt a drop in the ocean.

And yes listening to Barry Manilow is still an offence :D
  • ok i am 16 and obviously parents car, we took the jewellery and laptop cos our house has been broken into once, but we always take valubles with us, they will be checking the CCTV cameras tommorow and the police also said that it depends cos sometimes the CCTV cameras dont work which was a surprise, i dont really want to go into long procedures like tracking IP addresses down etc cos i dont think the police are showing much interest anyway...they also said that the criminal uses something to find out which car has a laptop inside, so he got what he wanted but he also got the jewellery!

We found evidence this morning which we will hand into the police station, a red screwdriver with scratches but unfortunately someone had to touch it!

And i also just realized that the laptop doesnt turn on without its adapter! There was some fault in its battery
