Could l ask why you had £3000 worths of uninsured jewellery in your boot.

do you not have house insurance with cover for away from the home

As the OP is under 16 it will be her parents insurance.

She says it was the boot of HER car. That would make her at least 17 although I concede she could still be under 18.

I am still not sure it would be covered though as it had been left in a car boot unattended.

All the advice in the world isn't going to reunite you with your stuff. Occasionally, life pi$$es on our chips and we're stuck with it.
What you should do is try every possible angle with your insurers. Also, do everything you can to protect against further problems associated with sensitive info on your laptop (on-line banking passwords, address books etc.)

  • Just a thought, if it was locked she may be. I thought it would be worth a look or a call to her insurance company. I know mine covers me.

I dont know if the jewellery was one piece or more but single value items like that usually have to be marked down seperatly.

Im still wondering why you would be carrying high value items like that around though.

If you have comprehensive insurance than you generally have £100 of cover for items left in the car.

Home insurance would normally cover it if you have contents.

There will ultimately be the question of why did you leave it in the boot of a car - ie did you take all reasonable precautions to prevent the loss

Mine too. Some insurance companies insist on having details of laptops and require details of the jewellery if any individual piece is over a certain limit, but the limit is usually pretty generous (usually £1000-1500). The OP needs to check with her own (or her parent's, if she really is 16 - where did that info come from, BTW?).

I can't imagine why you'd have that sort of stuff with you either, or if you had, why you wouldn't have it on your person and hang on for grim death, but hopefully the OP will get compensated and will be more careful in future.

I guess it would depend on the circumstances. Was the boot actually broken into? A relatively common scam which I think is more prevalent in London is to distract drivers at traffic lights and an accomplice takes advantage that most people leave their boots unlocked while driving.
