What model was it? Probably a C4000 based on the price, but afaik they refresh the outer design every year, but it's probably still based on older tech.

Generally speaking, a new TV will be better than an older one, but if you went from a top end tv to a bottom end, you're going to see differences.

However, if the shop doesn't let you see SD, don't buy from them. Go to somewhere that does, or buy it online and return it under DSR. it's entirely unreasonable to expect to look at a tv in a shop, then expect them to foot the bill for your indecisiveness. They're shops, not free rental companies.

SD is the hardest thing for the TVs to do, but it's down to you to do some research to see which ones are best. When I bought a new phone, I must have read 50 reviews for the model I bought, let alone the ones I didn't go for. I looked up how to root it and upgrade it. I checked prices, availability, researched all the pitfalls and any changes to the scene that are due to be coming to see if i'd need a phone that would be ready for them or not... and that was a £100 purchase.

When I changed my TV, I spent 6 months checking prices and fiddling about with them. It helps i work selling Tvs, but I still took a long time to decide on what I was to go for, because although where I work you CAN be flakey and return for whatever reason, I still wouldn't have the nerve to do that, not to mention that it costs the shop and they have to re-sell it as used, which makes it hard to shift. it's often not worth a shop's time to sell you anything else because you'll probably try to return it again, and they don't make that much profit on TVs.

I'd recommend going for a Sony KDL32EX403, rather than a bottom end samsung. It's currently £299 from some places and is a great TV. But once again, look at the SD performance, NOT HD.

Also, if you're using a sky box or anything that connects by scart, it'll look rubbish, too.

Yes, I understand that. Thanks for your reply. You are correct of course. I wrongly assumed that after an hour, if we suddenly found, lets say even the remote control too heavy, we could swap it for another model. Customer services isn't set up like Tesco's, in that they cant over ride the branch. The lady from central customer services said sometimes they would swap it for another model, but thats up to the store manager. I wanted to bring attention to the fact that aintree branch will sell you the TV that they want to shift, and then its bad luck if you dont like it. Thats all! Moral of story - Shop in Tescos and Asda for everything electrical, as if you dont like it, its too bad once its opened. This allows poor quality products to be sold, and unless there is a fault, its just too bad. Lesson learned :)

you misunderstand. My point is the Comet T&Cs state you are entitled to full store credit or a refund minus restock fee
so if you want a different model, use their T&Cs and get your store credit,or take the hit and get a cash refund

My mom had the same when she bought one to fit a specific cabinet and she asked if she could return it before purchase too.

She stood her ground and did get a refund.

I had heard that 'restocking fees' were being challenged by the OFT?

I always avoid Comet myself, had very bad service ourselves a few years ago and have never been back.
  • I am off to the snug now to see if Brenda will refund me for last night.

Where does it say that? The only thing I see is where it mentions it has to be unused. OP has used the tv.

    Isn't that just regarding DSR?

Oh it could be, even so a ludicrous cost for taping up a box and then putting it back on a shelf.

If it was taken back 'unopened' I'm sure they'd open the box to check it's contents anyway.

DS has just told me that he went in a few months back to get a DVD player. There was no display model but he was informed that the same T&C's applied (opened box etc.) - how on earth are you supposed to know if you want it if you can't even see it???
Needless to say he walked away.

With things like TVs, computers etc it's easy to see if it's really been opened or not by the fact that most manufacturers use branded tape which you can see if it's been broken.

Some even have a 'security seal' as well. If none of that's been broken, then it doesn't need checking.

The reason for a 10% restock fee, is because shops can't sell something 'used' as new, so have got to knock something off the price. As soon as someone sees a product as "used" they want to know why it was returned, assume it's faulty, and won't pay full price for it. Most customers consider a 10% reduction to be too little and expect more.

With regards to something like a DVD player, the specification is the most important thing, and a review. It doesn't really matter what it looks like, physically, and they're easy to come by.

If your product is brand new, unused and the box is unopened

Just take it back to a Comet store with your receipt within 28 days (14 days for a computer). We'll either give you a full refund or a gift card - it's up to you.

If the product’s too big to bring back yourself give us a ring on 0844 800 95 95 and we'll have it collected, though there will be a charge.
    If you've opened the box

As long as you’ve not actually used the product, the process is the same. But if the item costs £25 or more, there’s a restocking fee of 10% of the original price up to a maximum of £99. This pays for repackaging and restocking.

To avoid this fee you can ask for a gift card credit for the full value.

It really helps us if you bring all the original packaging back with your order.

One more thing. If anything’s missing - like the remote control, leads or manuals - we can’t take your order back. So make sure you hang on to everything that came with it.

We also can’t take back any pre-recorded videos, DVD, audio, video game or software products if the seal’s been broken - unless they’re faulty, of course.

    right there

The comet T&C do indeed state that you are entitled to a full store credit or refund minus stock fee, but only if the goods are unused.

But in the opening post, the OP clearly states that they have used the TV, so they are not entitled to a refund or exchange.
We had a TV, we opened, set up, and didn't like,

well i would assume the OP could box it back up and return it as unused
unless comet are going to set it up and check the hours monitor(unless its been removed in the firmware)
I would class that as unused as in the way you try on a pair of jeans and they are unsuitable
