Comet Aintree Returns Policy

Unbelievable. Has anyone ever bought a product from Comet, and tried to return it? We had a TV, we opened, set up, and didn't like, so took it back 1 hour later. The store wouldn't even give us vouchers for a more expensive one. The store has a 28 day returns policy - only if you don't open it. How do you know whether you are happy with it, if you don't open it? The picture was poorer quality than the samsung we replaced, and the TV was dated 2007 in the instructions. Does anyone else think this is disgraceful? Asda and Tesco's, don't even check the products returned, yet these guys had all the leads, testing it and saying the picture was OK. Need people opinions, as I am going to write to consumer groups. I don't think people think about this when buying. We were also mis-sold the product, as the salesman ( jeff ) did not say it was an older model, and seemed keen to sell us this particular one. He said it would be better than a 5 year old samsung worth £1000, even though this one was £399. Now we are stuck with a TV that makes my eyes funny for 5 years, and to rub it in , the staff just didn't seem to care; like they were used to complaints. Well I found out each branch is responsible for its own returns policy, so obviously their manager covers any complaints without intervention from any higher customer service. I can only threaten not to shop here again, but is this just economics? I am worth much more to tesco's than Comet.

thats not what the Comet site states
Changing your mind (after seven days)
If your product is brand new, unused and the box is unopened

Just take it back to a Comet store with your receipt within 28 days (14 days for a computer). We'll either give you a full refund or a gift card - it's up to you.

If the product’s too big to bring back yourself give us a ring on 0844 800 95 95 and we'll have it collected, though there will be a charge.
    If you've opened the box

As long as you’ve not actually used the product, the process is the same. But if the item costs £25 or more, there’s a restocking fee of 10% of the original price up to a maximum of £99. This pays for repackaging and restocking.

To avoid this fee you can ask for a gift card credit for the full value.

It really helps us if you bring all the original packaging back with your order.

One more thing. If anything’s missing - like the remote control, leads or manuals - we can’t take your order back. So make sure you hang on to everything that came with it.

We also can’t take back any pre-recorded videos, DVD, audio, video game or software products if the seal’s been broken - unless they’re faulty, of course.

however, from your post you went into Comet without doing any research?
a salesman is there to sell what Comet want sold.
the onus is on you to know what you want/need

    Squirrel!
If I tell you who I work for, I'm not allowed to help you. If I don't say, then I can help you with questions and fixing products. Regardless, there's still no secret EU law.

Yes, I understand that. Thanks for your reply. You are correct of course. I wrongly assumed that after an hour, if we suddenly found, lets say even the remote control too heavy, we could swap it for another model. Customer services isn't set up like Tesco's, in that they cant over ride the branch. The lady from central customer services said sometimes they would swap it for another model, but thats up to the store manager. I wanted to bring attention to the fact that aintree branch will sell you the TV that they want to shift, and then its bad luck if you dont like it. Thats all! Moral of story - Shop in Tescos and Asda for everything electrical, as if you dont like it, its too bad once its opened. This allows poor quality products to be sold, and unless there is a fault, its just too bad. Lesson learned :)

Yes, but they had HD on. The problem is with standard television. My point was, what happens if I just dont like the TV, for what ever reason. Lets say the menu is too complicated, or its too big for our room. I will just have to be more careful in future, that we buy from a place with a change your mind policy, even if its opened - maybe 3 days would be enough. Its anoying, as we saw a nice one in Asda, but the salesman convinced us this one was a real bargain. Maybe the fact he gave us free gold leads, even when we had already committed to buy the item, was a clue to the picture was not quite up to the quality he said it was. But that might just be my bad mind thinking no-one gives you anything for nothing. We certainly wont be buying the camera we want from anyone other place other than Tescos or Asda.

True, but if Comet say you may return for gift vouchers to the full amount I would expect them to stand by their promise.

But custardy already showed the T&Cs to which i read

Maybe there could suddenly be a fault with the TV. Maybe the fuse could blow in the plug, leaving the TV so it doesn't work. I can't see them trying to fix it in the store.

I bought something from Comet just recently. Is the receipt stapled to an orange pamphlet? Mine was, and it basically says what is on their website which has this info:

Take it back but tell them you didn't use it. ;)
There's a storm coming, Mr Johnson. You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you're all gonna wonder how you ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.

:) They did though. I then said the TV had turned off after half an hour on its own, and they said for intermittent faults, they would just replace it with the same one. If they could find no fault with it, they would not offer a refund. They have all the kit for testing it at customer services. Its a very stressful experience, and they are very firm, almost a little aggressive. Not a job I would like, as some big guy was kicking off over his hoover, and I thought he was going to punch the guy. They obviously are used to this type of thing. I have taken mobiles, cd players back after 20 days to Tesco's and they just refund you without question. I guess they figure, they are making loads anyway from me through my weekly shopping.
