New to accepting payment via Paypal - Unconfirmed address : (

Options
Hiya

I've recently started accepting payments via Paypal on eBay, and after reading many threads I ONLY send via recorded delivery (so I always have proof of delivery in case of a chargeback claim). So far confirmed addresses have always been provided from my buyers.

I've now received payment for an item where the address is unconfirmed. The item's going to be sent recorded, but am I leaving myself vulnerable to anything due to the address being unverified? Is it standard practice/advised for people to actually state in their listings that if buyers pay via Paypal they can only do so if their address is confirmed?

Does anyone else only offer recorded delivery? Or am I safe offering standard delivery for anyone paying via cheque or direct bank transfer (to bring the cost down, plus I'd obviously ask the Post Office for a proof of posting receipt)?

Many thanks for any advice offered x  x

  • try using 192.com to check if the person is listed at the address they have given.
I never use recorded delivery unless the buyer requests it, and if they do they pay for it. I usually just get a certificate of posting.
  • Thanks for the reply Taloola - so you'd post items standard delivery, even if paid via Paypal, and a proof of posting receipt would be enough to cover yourself against a charge back?
  • My experience so far is that anything "general" I sell on eBay I send recorded - my main product costs 5,95 plus 2,00 postage and I know the market quite well which is generally honest and I just send those off first class. ;) But I do it at the post office so always have a receipt in case of non-delivery. (one so far out of nearly 350 - got refund too!)

If I am selling an "individual item" which is paid for by Paypal I always send signed for to protect against Paypal taking the money back both in UK and overseas. So far I don't know if I am wasting money as I haven't had a problem but I deal with a very specific and largely genuine market (equestrian) so may be just very lucky.

I am also lucky because I live in the country and do most of my despatches from the same post office with the same lady who knows exactly what I am doing and gives the the right advice!

    Hope this is some help.
  • I insist (politely) in my listings for higher value items on confirmed addresses. On lower value ones, I'll let it go.

Bottom line is: no confirmed address = no seller protection = you're screwed in the event of a credit card chargeback.

  • Hi Frivolous Fay - are you screwed even if you have proof of deliverey (i.e. it's sent recorded)?

This is also happening to me so I'm interested. Dumbass question: what exactly is a confirmed address? Does it mean one which corresponds to financial details the buyer has given ebay/paypal?

My buyer also has zero feedback - I'm thinking I'm definitely sending recorded!

Well, recorded delivery won't help you if it went to the wrong address.

  • I think you only get a confirmed address after you have bought or sold quite a lot of items. I have posted out over 4,500 items and never bothered about unconfirmed addresses. The only time I check is when the ebay address doesn't match the Paypal address.

  • You get a confirmed address when you follow the procedure to confirm it - along the lines of - pp give you a 4 digit code, you tell pp to ring you, they ring, you input the code.

It's a 5 minute job which is why I don't feel bad asking buyers to do it.
