Can you use virgin media box for just watching freeview channels?

Can the virgin media box be used for normal viewing without having to pay a monthly charge?

If so how do you go about it?

Virgin boxes belong to Virgin as does the cable connection. Your best bet would be to contact Virgin to see what deal they may offer, or get a digital aerial or dish and the matching box or TV.

The council used to provide the television through the cable connection, they then stopped and the service was taken over by virgin at a charge no choice. Now after twelve months it's either stay with them for the monthly charge or get an aerial.

I just wondered if you could just have basic tv with the media box before going to the expense of an aerial and free-view box.

You cannot legally connect a third party European cable box to the VM network to receive the small amount of channels they currently send unencrypted.

For free digital TV you will need either and aerial for freeview or a dish for freesat.

It wasn't a virgin media network originally. It was passed onto virgin media 12 months ago. So now I assume they own the cable? Interesting.

woah hang on you will be able to use the virgin box to get free channels ok not all the freebies you get with a freeview box but you do get them and this is the serect you say to them.

I really like enjoying using the on demand service, is there a chance that i can cancle all your packages but keep the box so you can use it to view on demand services and catch up tv.

Once you end your sub your VM box will become purely ornamental-and, since it's VM's property anyway, you have to return it or get billed for it.

With Virginmedia, you can get freeview TV with their boxes. They call it TV M and do not actively promote it. I have the following with VM :

- TV M (I also have a V+ box)
- Broadband L
- Phone L

I currently pay approx £28 per month (includes phones line rental) but I did have to negotiate hard to get this deal for that amount and I do get discounts for being a long-term customer with VM. My monthly bill shows that I am charged nothing for TV M or the V+ box; so I pay really £28 for the phone and b/band.

Suggest you contact VM and mention the TV M deal and see what they offer. If you don't have your phone or b/band with them, I suggest that you offer this as well to see if you can get a package deal.
