good luck with the hospital op Patman
and Patman is right. If you like the job, apply for it anyway, YOU never know who is reading the CVs and what they see in them! I use to read CVs as part of my job and recruit from them. I took someone on that I really didn't want to, as we were desperate for Staff, and I was right the first time to discard his CV! And other CVs, we recruited some really great staff!0 -
I don't want cruise ships either. I want sort of head office things, planning tourism, working for visit kent/britain...expedia head office, thomson behind the scenes. I don't want anything front line.
I haven't a scooby what to do or where to go either 3dogs. I dunno if the job centre would be much help, they'd probably suggest travel agents and things. Everyone always expects tourism jobs to be front line but i don't want that!!
You need to contact your local council to see about jobs in the tourism dept and also your local tourism board too. Make an appointment with someone go in with your cv say you have a job at the moment but are there any part time jobs you can do to get your foot in the door or see if there is any workshadowing or work experience you can offer. Tourism journals should have vacancies advertised. Can't remember what they are called any more. Problem is lots of local authority jobs are being cut due to gov't short termism but you have to be determined and believe in yourself. I shall patman. I've totally re vamped my CV and i change it every time i apply for a job. Hope the cataract op goes well. When i applied to be an air hostess i told them in the interview i needed an operation on my foot and was due to have it soon. They still gave me the job so you never know.
SW: I worked for visit kent briefly, and my boss said that to get into the tourism dept of a council is hard if you don't know anyone there, they give the jobs away internally every time. I think my course was a let down in that we didn't do anything to gain experience, and i suppose there wasn't the advice to go out and seek it. I guess i should have been more clued up myself but back then the situation was different and everyone presumed they would walk into a job. In fact, no body in my whole class has actually got a job in tourism yet. Most of us are still doing the same work we did to get us through it!! Bad times.
I'm applying for a merchandiser graduate scheme within Arcadia. I like clothes, i have experience in retail so perhaps i'm in with a better chance with that one. It closes in May so i have plenty of time to create a sharp application.
Thanks for the support guys. It gets really hard sometimes to keep the motivation up when you constantly get rejections. You end up regretting every choice you made in the last 10 years of your life!!0 -
Just got back a while ago. Full up and tired. I ate chips and had a lovely meal with vegetables and a chicken and bacon melt thing. So tired. Going to bed for a bit.
Vix meet summertea, she is really nice and job hunting too. She has just written a lovely letter on her thread for a research job. Wow!Aiming for a minimal spend 20220 -
Sounds yummy SW!! I have just popped over there, she has written a really good covering letter. It surprises me that even someone with a PHD struggles to get a job.0

At the moment Vix, it doesn't matter how qualified you are, people are struggling for work. In fact most employers are reluctant to take on anyone too qualified, as they will want more money, will walk as soon as a better job comes along, etc.
My Deputy Manager has a marketing degree. He couldn't get a job for 2 years but he did admit that he was happy on the dole and was not actively seeking! He got put on a course with the company we work with and then offered a placement, which he had to take, then got a job, then got moved ever so nicely into a management position which he is not capable of doing! We have a director who was made redundant, came along to this company for a training day, and luckily found a director position within this company!0 -
Hello everyone,
BF cooked lovely tea last night. Steak and pots and cabbage with yummy gravy. It was sooo good. Today he made sure that my place was presentable for letting agency to come for inspection while I was out with work in activity day. I was third in air pistol and air rifle shootingMust go and give DD pudding. Back later...
