Basically at the moment us Virgin media customers who are on the 10 mb speed package are paying often the same price if not more than many other ISPS who are recieving 20 mb speeds as standard for the price we are paying for 10 mb speed, despite Virgin media being the leading and largest U.K. ISP.

I strongly feel for us that are on the 10mb speeds (large package) are due a free upgrade to be placed onto 20mb speeds to bring us into line with most other home ISP standard speeds.

Okay I realise that many ISPS such as sky and bt place a fair usage limit onto their standard 20 mb packages although I rarely use more than this limit, so I feel if they intend on keeping 10mb as standard unlimited then there should be 2 options available for the same price such as:

You can keep 10 mb speeds with unlimited download limits or

You can switch to paying the same price with a 5gb usage limit in replacment for a 20 mb internet speed.

Granted not so long ago the customers on the 1mb package Virgin were providing for their standard speed service was upgraded for free not so long ago to the current 10mb standard service although this free upgrade was mainly due to how they wanted to scrap the 1mb speed access altogether and at the same time most ISPs standard speed was around 20 mb whilst the 1 mb Virgin speed was still around.

Within the last few weeks Virgin customers who are on the 20mb speed have been offered an upgrade for the price of £30 to change them onto a new speed of 30mb this £30 charge included the provision of the new virgin super hub cable modem and the connection to the new service.

I am aware that there may be a few posters who decide to say hey if you dont like Virgin medias current base speeds then you should change onto another ISP although all this does in the meantime is lose customers for Virgin media and the process of switching ISPS is not always easy especially for those people who only have a Virgin media landline and Virgin media unfortunately being the only ISP to offer customers home internet access without having to have a landline installed so to switch providers you would have to go through the major hassle of having BT install a phoneline so you are left to choose another ISP

To the above SKY and BT and other home ISP providers please take note that surely there would be a market for you to provide home broadband access without the need for an actual phoneline to be installed as if virgin can do it then this is doable, however Virgin are currently able to do such service because there broadband does not require access to a phoneline whereas all other home ISPS (the non mobile ones) require that you have an active phoneline installed because this is how they provide you with their service through an active phoneline which other than Virgin is only a BT phoneline wether or not you pay BT for your phone services.

Thankyou for reading, please feel free to post with further positive comments leaving this a board for positive views on the subject only and for those who feel Virgin are good to keep the old 10mb speeds please feel free to create your own posts stating this :)

Sorry but I have no sympathy. If you want faster VM sell faster products.

The average speed for customers on a BT phoneline is nearer to 4Mbps than 24Mbps.

If you are dissatisfied with VM then move to a different ISP.

Hello all, hopefully this post will recieve support as I feel it is certainley due.

Basically at the moment us Virgin media customers who are on the 10 mb speed package are paying often the same price if not more than many other ISPS who are recieving 20 mb speeds as standard for the price we are paying for 10 mb speed, despite Virgin media being the leading and largest U.K. ISP.

And you're getting the 10Mb,Others not fortunate to have cable have speeds stated up to 8,16,20Mb (paying the same price)and see nowhere near this from BT lines, who incidentally are the largest ISP by consumer numbers and coverage

I strongly feel for us that are on the 10mb speeds (large package) are due a free upgrade to be placed onto 20mb speeds to bring us into line with most other home ISP standard speeds.

I'm sure ALL on copper line broadband (many still under 2Mb) would like a free upgrade to get even your 10MB

Okay I realise that many ISPS such as sky and bt place a fair usage limit onto their standard 20 mb packages although I rarely use more than this limit, so I feel if they intend on keeping 10mb as standard unlimited then there should be 2 options available for the same price such as:

Well No,some ISP's have a FUP but should tell you what it is and both SKY and BE are totally unlimited on the products advertised as such with no throttling either,Bt have a 40,100 and 300 Gb product to choose from.

You can keep 10 mb speeds with unlimited download limits or

You can switch to paying the same price with a 5gb usage limit in replacment for a 20 mb internet speed.

Fine for light users and similar to what Sky do with their own equipment in the exchange, same speed for all up to 20Mb, 2Gb usage cap is free

Bt upgraded many exchanges to ADSL Max 8Mb as standard and then the 24Mb
In May 2010, average download speeds were 5.2Mbit/s, 45 per cent of average advertised ‘up to’ speeds (11.5Mbit/s).

Within the last few weeks Virgin customers who are on the 20mb speed have been offered an upgrade for the price of £30 to change them onto a new speed of 30mb this £30 charge included the provision of the new virgin super hub cable modem and the connection to the new service.

Sounds a good deal to me

I am aware that there may be a few posters who decide to say hey if you dont like Virgin medias current base speeds then you should change onto another ISP although all this does in the meantime is lose customers for Virgin media and the process of switching ISPS is not always easy especially for those people who only have a Virgin media landline and Virgin media unfortunately being the only ISP to offer customers home internet access without having to have a landline installed so to switch providers you would have to go through the major hassle of having BT install a phoneline so you are left to choose another ISP

Many have no other choice but to use a landline based service, as BT are the only company who have to cover the whole of the UK and allow others to use their infrastructure, Virgin Media cherry pick the best areas to install cable

Why would a competitor want to use cable where virgin is already available?
If they did decide to use cable and were like Virgin not sharing with others how many lines would you need coming in to your home, 1 for BT another Sky yet another Talk talk? How easy would it be to change providers then.

BT Wholesale have a fibre product which is currently being rolled out across the UK with the last few metres using the existing copper phone line giving average speeds of 20-30 Mb with a 100 Mb product Fibre to the Premises avaiable shortly, however

What annoys me most about Virgin Media is their telephone rates for calling 0845 numbers.
Their cable internet service is good. I'm on 10Mb and usually get very close to that. I could switch to a phone line based service, but would be lucky to get a speed anywhere near that, regardless of the advertised "up to" speed.
Even with their April price increases, their service is still quite good value for money. If I wanted more than 10Mb, I'd pay for it. Positively.

I cancelled my phoneline as soon as i was outside my contract period and now just receive cable bb from them.

If you have a giffgaff sim and a tesco Lite sim and you get sufficient free minutes with your mobile, there's not much reason to have a fixed line.

I now pay an average of about £12.50 a month for 10mg BB. Supposed to be £20.25 a month but I phone to 'cancel' every 4 months or so and they always give me a £30 bill credit (bribe) to stay. Done it 3 times now. No contract (just going month to month), no phoneline and good speeds with unlimited download for £12.50 a month. I'm happy.

doh, again negs, negs, negs, read the post

    moving isp isnt easy

ps as for the stated speeds, yes i realise that, i also realise how i had months worth of speedtests via spee*test.net all reporting less than 1.5mb service! often less than 1mb

I guess those that have trawled through it don't support you. "I deserve something for free" clearly isn't a very good campaign message.

It's very easy - I have done so many times. Of course it may not be cheap...

In that case I suggest you read the third line of my earlier post.

And you're getting the 10Mb,Others not fortunate to have cable have speeds stated up to 8,16,20Mb (paying the same price)and see nowhere near this from BT lines, who incidentally are the largest ISP by consumer numbers and coverage

i regulary had to put up with a 1mb service from virgin despite signed to 10mb, they are not perfect with their speeds, remember the years of ntl who offered free internet with no other service, i have been with virgin since diamond cable years (loyalty) and a lot of sky if they do get slow speeds, sky can say hey its free.

I'm sure ALL on copper line broadband (many still under 2Mb) would like a free upgrade to get even your 10MB

very few base are now 2mb unless portable which is base speed eg internet dongles as for the free id be happy with the following deal and strongly feel if virgin dont keep on top and start to phase out 10mb at the same as most other permanent fixtures they will start to lose custom, granted many have a download limit but id be happy with this 2mb hence suggestion of 2 package levels if they are set on keeping 10mb again suggestions not demands eg 1 level 10mb unlimited same price 20mb 2gb-5gb limit.

Well No,some ISP's have a FUP but should tell you what it is and both SKY and BE are totally unlimited on the products advertised as such with no throttling either,Bt have a 40,100 and 300 Gb product to choose from.

virgin do have a hidden fair usage although it is really high then they say they can limit you despite were companies are getting away with saying this deals unlimited usage which is what needs stopping as in fairness yes its unlimited yet they place speed restrictions on you i have never passed these so really should not of been recieving 1mb for months on end (at least 6 and when asking for compensation lol they refunded me 14p!!!)

Fine for light users and similar to what Sky do with their own equipment in the exchange, same speed for all up to 20Mb, 2Gb usage cap is free

i would be happy with a 2gb limit i doubt i would pass it no downloads etc except windows update.

Within the last few weeks Virgin customers who are on the 20mb speed have been offered an upgrade for the price of £30 to change them onto a new speed of 30mb this £30 charge included the provision of the new virgin super hub cable modem and the connection to the new service.

Sounds a good deal to me

yes i would be happy paying £30 to upgrade 20mb and get the super hub which however is reported to be having problems

Many have no other choice but to use a landline based service, as BT are the only company who have to cover the whole of the UK and allow others to use their infrastructure, Virgin Media cherry pick the best areas to install cable

virgin are in a lot of areas now mainly country were its uncovered but are they being forced to make sure they get coverage after all other countries are far beyond our current capabilities

Why would a competitor want to use cable where virgin is already available?
If they did decide to use cable and were like Virgin not sharing with others how many lines would you need coming in to your home, 1 for BT another Sky yet another Talk talk? How easy would it be to change providers then.

mainly due to how if i could get broadband without a phoneline other than virgin i would and i bet many others would due to landlines being mostly replaced by mobiles with many mobile prices touching landline prices now and it would provide healthy competition as currently virgin can charge what they want for broadband only as they are the only provider other than dongles etc as there current price of £20 a month 10mb broadband is quite high when you can get the phone and tv for another £10

BT Wholesale have a fibre product which is currently being rolled out across the UK with the last few metres using the existing copper phone line giving average speeds of 20-30 Mb with a 100 Mb product Fibre to the Premises avaiable shortly, however

to the above virgin are rolling out 100mb is bt also going for this?

Thankyou for reading, please feel free to post with further positive comments leaving this a board for positive views on the subject only and for those who feel Virgin are good to keep the old 10mb speeds please feel free to create your own posts stating this

Ooops sorry its not a positive view but it is mine.

hey ho we all have views at least with yours iv been able to break down why i think 10mb should be replaced with 20mb and you havent been overly harsh like some will eg you havent been nope dont care, tough switch users etc to switch no matter what anyone says isnt easy without a bt line already installed and you still have the hassle of arranging dates etc and bt want a huge amount for a phoneline install sometimes on offer but yep with other providers providing net without phoneline would bring in lower prices for all so...

as for virgin tv medium is basically freeview hence why i would love to scrap medium + certainley aint much better and as for the phone yes would happily scrap in place for mobile and remove the £11.99 line rental need, why the hell do they have that anyway, if the line wasnt there you wouldnt be on there service, surely over the years wev paid something like 2grand on renting a line, erm no maitenance since installed and would not of cost that much to lay and for the techie that put it in and he was another company back then, granted the network needs maintaining but...

i never said that, far from, i just aint happy how we pay the same for 10mb as many do for 20mb regardless of wether they get it virgin are capable of providing it and sky cant be bitten at as there broadband depending on package is FREE

also those neg posters whos to say they arnt virgin?

i got many people commenting on companies posts with neg comments only to find they work for them lol

either way no not for free! a suggestion of 2 packages if read properly i am a light user who virgin does not cater for, they just have a 10mb base speed which is unlimited and that is it, now i only suggest a 2 level of the same price, you stay with 10mb you get unlimited downloads you are happy, you get another package which is 20mb speed but with a fair usage of 2-5gb hey alls happy

and as someone else states you may not require a phoneline, we are in the same situation although due to virgin being the only provider of broadband without a phoneline other than dongles, we are stuck with them or the hassle of having to cancel every few months a fair price of 10mb broadband with no landline would be £15 max after all £11.99 of the current is line rental

so atm it is just over £30 for broadband 10mb medium + tv and phoneline meaning it is only £10 extra for medium tv + in high def! and phone rental with free calls etc

i just know if bt and sky started to provide broadband without requiring you to have a phoneline then it would create competiton on that side of the market forcing virgin to keep the non phoneline option costs down so it becomes a greater deal for all, the overall meaning of this site after all is money saving and reasons to show to companies as to why it could be a good side to look into!

after all most of my posts are based along suggestions as companies will read them and despite not being supposed to without authorisation will sometimes comment back on them making it look good in the process and putting the original post down as crap because it could cause a little concern for their buisness.
