Can you not move your pc to where the router is and connect it via a lead then see if windows update comes up with the driver.

Windows won't detect the router as the network port isn't working, a driver needs installing before this port can work and it appears that the drivers that come preloaded into Windows aren't suitable.

All i can find is ....
    AMD Sempron Processor
    LE1250
    2.21 GHz 384mb RAM

That's not enough info I don't think, that's just the CPU information but we'll need the motherboard infomation.

If you can download SIW.exe diagnostic software using another working PC, then copy to your PC and run the program it should list (tons) of info including the motherboard make and model.

If you do decide to try this, download SIW.exe standalone version < here > , copy this onto a memory stick and then copy to your PC, double click the file and it'll open without any installation or leaving any junk behind after use. It's a useful tool to decode what's inside your PC inluding software serial numbers, temps, memory types etc. It's 2.2MB in size and safe to use.

Windows XP automatically loads the drivers for most (if not all) network cards - so I suspect that the OP is not doing something right
Can you try going to 192.168.0.1 on your browser ?
putting in admin and your password
let us know whether this lets you connect

    I'll try this later today.

this is incorrect....the number of rebuilt pc's Ive done that have needed several drivers in order to function is a big number .... and one of the most common ones missing (i.e., not in the windows drivers list), is for the ethernet port.

The OP needs to know what mobo he's got to track what network adapter he needs the driver for :)
    ......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D
  • right have run the programme as advised previously.
Don't know quite what you need but have gotten the motherboard details.

    Make Biostar
    Model N61PA-M25
    Ver - 1.0

North bridge NVIDIA MCP61 Revision A3
South bridge (As above, same as North)

And then in the DEVICES , I've got a list for Network Adaptors.

    WAN MINIPORT (PPTP)
WAN Miniport (IP)- Packet scheduler mini ...
    Direct Parallel
    WAN Miniport (L2TP)
    WAN Miniport (IP)
    WAN Miniport (PPPOE)

(Each of these has the + sign next to them, when i click it, it brings up a long list of stuff)

  • Are the lights flashing on both the router and network card on your pc?, You could just have a dud network card.
  • The lights are flashing on the router.
All i know is when i plugged the ethernet cable in,a LED lit up on the back of the PC.

Hmm that model isn't found but similar ones exist so if you want to chance it you could download what hopefully will work for your board's ethernet network. I "think" your ethernet controller is "Realtek RTL8201CL - 10/100 PHY" and almost all the boards listed as NF61 ver 1 seem to use the same one.

    http://www.biostar.com.tw/app/en/mb/index.php

Scroll down and see "NVIDIA GeForce 6100 and NF61S-M2 TE" and there you can download the driver for "Chipset-Ethernet" and choose the one depending on your operating system (most likely to be XP 32bit or Vista 32bit)

All the biostar NF61 series boards seem to have the same drivers so hopefully it'll work but it might pay to do a 'system restore' and create a backup before installing incase it's the wrong driver and causes issues. Sorry to be uncertain but the model you mention isn't on Biostar's website so I've found what looks to be the closest match.

I should make the disclaimer that the above is just a best guess and might be worth waiting to see if anyone else can offer better advise. Usually trying to install the wrong driver just won't install and that's that but as with anything computer related it can all go wrong so only proceed if you've backed up and are happy to chance it otherwise visit the shop who supplied it and ask them to supply the motherboard CD that you should have received or let them load the right drivers.

I should mention that it's also possible that you should install the motherboard chipset drivers if you've not done this but am reluctant to suggest this as we're not certain what you've got and motherboard drivers do need to be correct before installing them.
