6k a year doubling to 12 still doesn't really merit a diesel IMO

Almost certainly suffer from DPF isues for the initial use of the vehicle too

I think it hardly warrants a giant four wheel dive either.
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

I assumed he meant something like a Nissan Quasquai (sp) which isn't exactly massive
  • Sorry, this wasn't supposed to be about whether I need a Range Rover to do the run or not but about the DPF. I live in the semi countryside and the last two winters have left us with little option other than to take your life in your hands or drive a 4x4. Kitty was about spot on with the Qashqai suggestion but one alternative, the Hyundai ix35 only has a decent diesel engine with auto and 4x4, hence the DPF question.

There would be a potential fuel saving but that isn't a consideration, the safety and practicality issues are paramount. In any case, some of these crossover types run as 2WD for the vast majority of the time.

My gut feeling is to avoid the DPF but I don't intend changing this vehicle for some time and I'd like more than a 3 year warranty. Hence, I'm looking at options.

As for why they offer diesels, well, the rising fuel costs are only going to push things further that way.

Deisel automatic - think about the cost of car tax. If you have the NISSAN Qashqai mentioned a diesel auto will cost £425 in year one and £235 after that whereas the petrol manual is £300 followed by £200.

Immaterial. Cost is not the overriding issue here. It could be a gazillion pounds but it will not affect the ability to use a car in this manner with a DPF.

If cost is not the overriding issue then buy a petrol - using a vehicle with a DPF in that manner WILL lead to problems

Im afraid you've been blinded by popular myth and corporate advertising.
A normal 2wd fitted with winter tyres will be as effective if not more effective than a 4x4 on summer tyre's.

Your cheapest, safest and wisest option is to buy a set of winter tyre's for your current vehicle.

Many people on these forums have tried winter tyre's and will individually attest to their superiority.

But....... Personally (and this is just personal), I think your just trying to justify buying a Chelsea tractor to uses as a fashion accessory like sooooo many school run wannabe middle/upper class mums.

What a lot of tosh you get on here.

IX35 is an excellent family vehicle and much greener than many, many cars or other vehicles on the road. Its 4 wheel drive will easily cope with the winters we now get (and is widely believed will be with us from now on) without faffing about with spare wheels, winter tyres and so on (winter tyres seem to be the new quasi religion - have the manufacturers reps all discovered forums?)

Back to the question op, surely you go out more than the just to school and back each day? modern DPF's are much more easier to please than the myths say, a bit of a run once a week will probably do it, my CR-V has one and some weeks has a very 'quiet' week of short trips without complaining.

Diesels make far more sense in these vehicles, the higher torque suits them better its as simple as that.

Only problem op is there is a LONG waiting list for a new IX35 currently.
