DPF - will this be ok ?

Daily school run of 3 miles in each direction, perhaps a little extra some days and then a run out every other weekend.

New 4x4 crossover as the likely target motor.

I read about the horror stories but I have to balance that against the fact that at least one potential vehicle only comes with a diesel auto box and then their is the increased mpg.

Currently running petrol around 30 mpg and doing 120 miles a week. If I got 40 mpg from the diesel then I'd save approximately a gallon a week. Likely future mileage near doubling and longer runs each day so saving perhaps 2 to 3 gallons a week. If I got more than 40 mpg then even more of a saving.

Not too worried about value for money but rather whether I can use a DPF vehicle for this purpose.

Personally, I would not buy a diesel (with or without dpf) if one is only driving circa 6,000 miles p.a.
  • For the DPF filter you would have to do at least one journey of 40 miles/1 Hour long to clear it or just drive with high revs ie 3rd gear 40mph as it really only suitable for over 12000 miles a year or engine thrashers.

You won't save anything at all..... Spending a pound to save a penny never made any sense.

What the hell do you want a 4x4 for if you just do the school run? For safety? Well that argument has been destroyed countless times.

As for 40MPG, you're in fantasy land. On the "school run" you may be lucky and get just over half of that but if its something like a Range Rover, expect high teens.

And your mileage will likely double to a whopping 6 miles? Same applies.

And DPF do not like short runs.

Why are there so many diesels sold these days. I drive one for work but do 30000 plus a year so it makes sense.

My wife drives a petrol and does about 5000 a year so that makes sense also (to me)

I see so many people driving diesels and only doing the school run and or shopping once a week

So they are paying extra for the diesel car in first plave and then more per litre...so where is the saving

Any small savings on a diesel will be lost by having to take it on long runs to get the DPF up to temp.

Is the school based in a muddy field or up a mountain track? I guess so and thats why you need a 4x4? Or is it because the other mums have them :)

In answer to your question, a diesel car with a DPF is not suitable for use in the way you describe - in my opinion (ex car mech and owner of 2 DPF cars)

The fact that you pay 3% more per litre for fuel is irrelevant when the MPG returned is typically 25-40% higher than a petrol engined equivalent model.

    Is that really necessary?
The greater danger, for most of us, lies not in setting our aim too high and falling short; but in setting our aim too low and achieving our mark

OK if the fuel costs are irrelevant what about the extra cost of the diesel car in first place.

Why do so many people buy diesels and only do a few thosand miles a year...does it make sense
