Adult cartoons

My kids are 1 and 3 years old. I've never considered the Simpsons and Futurama as "adult" so they've seen both of those - mostly the Simpsons as I've hardly ever seen Futurama. Having said that, I can't remember when we last saw either of those. It's more an "if it's on tv at the time" type thing.

The other cartoons are definitely "adult" in my opinion - the language is appalling and I seem to recall that the plots are dodgy too.

Do you really mean 1 and 3, or was that a mistake? At 1 surely no child watches anything, and at 3 the most my children had seen was The Tweenies! I would have thought at both these ages the children were too young to understand any of it anyway, it's when they get a bit older that you have to be more choosy. But then I would never let my children watch any of those, as I have an intense dislike of most American programmes!

My 6 month sat for an hour avidly watching a documentary about one of the first Australian govenors and she just adores Octonauts.

I LOVE King of the Hill, and my children have both watched that on occasion. I'm not sure what anyone would object to in that - its not particularly adult really, just an animated sitcom. As with any tv that my children watch, I would watch it first or with them so that I could check the content of any particular episode. Futurama DH and I watch, but I think it is too adult for our children (4&6), but I'd probably be happy with them watching it when they are a litte older.

I'd have more problems with The Simpsons to be honest. I don't think the behaviours and attitudes on there are particularly good, and I wouldn't really want my children to watch it, although I doubt catching the odd episode would cause them any lasting damage.

South Park is definitely for adults.

Not sure I know any of the other ones well enough to comment.

i guess it's a generational thing, i come from a time when Dennis really was a menace, Gnasher chewed the posties backside off & kids TV consisted of gunge, puppets of questionable sexuality & Timmy Mallet smacking people upside the head with his mallet! You wouldn't get away with half that stuff these days, but it didn't do me any real harm - add to that many years of watching American Pie movies, John McClane being a personal hero of mine & the fact that i've completed every single Grand Theft Auto game ever released it's a minor miracle i'm not a Daily Mail statistic on broken culture!

They've been on the TV when DD is around (4) but she doesn't pay attention to them as such, she does like the Simpsons, and likes to tell me that Bart is a naughty kid, and that she would not like hair like marge, any sort of joke or innuendo would go completely over her head.

Yep. Doesn't worry me, my kids can tell the difference between real life and cartoons.

I drew the line at DD watching Shameless. Which isn't to say she is lacking the mental capacity to understand it or appreciate the humour.

There's worse on the news and in the papers.
This ^^^^^^. Though my kids are older than some mentioned on here and it's mainly the eldest at 11 who likes them. I remember at Secondary school asking my friend if she'd seen something funny on Benny Hill, she replied that her and her siblings weren't allowed to watch it. The next time it was on, I watched it more avidly to see exactly what it was that was objectional and had previously been going over my head.
  • With regard to some programmes being on too late, you do know that they can watch them on the internet, don't you? And if your children don't there will be a child at school that has who can fill them in on entire storylines and gory details.
My son has watched the Simpsons for years; it is full of cultural references which often start family discussions. Even South Park has some interesting episodes, cloud of smug over San Francisco anyone?

The annoying thing about being me is that I can no longer use the 'it never did me any harm' argument. Not that whatever 'it' it is is responsible but clearly I have been damaged.

    Thanks everyone, very interesting. :D

OH and I disagree on this so I thought I'd poll your opinions.

DS is six, and he absolutely LOVES the Simpsons, and while occasionally the themes are quite adult, I don't think it's too bad.

Futurama is also allowed though I am less comfortable with this- sometimes it does come close to the wire!- this is my compromise.

OH would be happy to watch Family Guy and American Dad while DS is in the room but I have vetoed this pretty vehemently. I actually think it's rather worse for them to watch these at the age of 6 or 7 than at 2 or 3 because they understand just enough to give them the gist of what's going on.

I was just checking to make sure I wasn't being a paranoid mummy :rotfl:

    Cheers x
