Adult cartoons

Rather OT question, but do you let your children watch 'adult' cartoons such as Simpsons, Futurama, King of the Hill, American Dad, Family Guy and South Park?

If so, which ones? And how old are your children? How old were they when they started watching them?

Thanks! :D

    yes, to some extent.

I will let the children aged 12, 5 and 2 (2 yo more due to the fact they will be in the same room the TV is on, not that they actually watch it iykwim?) watch the simpsons when on channel 4 at tea time as they are suitably themed IMO if they are shown at that time.
My oh and I are simpsons fans and have seen most of them, i tend to remember the ones that would raise eyebrows or questions i dont want to answer so we look what episode it is before leaving them to watch it alone (i am usually busy preparing dinner when its on!)

DS1 will watch futurama, again shown at 6pm on sky 1...so at 12 hes more than old enough IMO

As for south park etc no way! I blush at the comments on there, let alone allow the children to watch it! Family Guy, american dad etc are all on too late for my children to be watching, so i dont even think they know they exist (yet!)

  • I watched the Simpsons from the age of about 10 but I didn't really get it - they showed an episode I watched loads of times when I was younger as my sister had it on video on Channel 4 last night and I finally got a joke I'd never understood until now.

I also remember watching Family Guy and King of the Hill when I was slightly older, about 13 or 14, when the schedulers presumably just thought they were like the Simpsons and stuck them in the early evening slots and then pulled them when they realised what it was. I also watched Futurama when I was about that age as well, but didn't see South Park until I was 16 and didn't really like it anyway.

Just because things are on before the watershed just means they don't have any explicit language, sex, violence... doesn't IMHO automatically make them suitable as you can't trust the TV companies to have your kids best interest at heart, they are only interested in making money which means viewing figures and advertising revenue. The more viewers the more they can charge for adverts. Its actually in the TV companies (and the program makers) interests to push the limits to increase kids interest, kids soon pick up on things pushing the limits.

Its up to the parents to apply judgement IMHO it CANNOT be left to the TV companies or censors who have their own agendas, the programs mentioned above are not allowed in my house, the kids are happy to be steered towards 'A&E' or 'How its made' 'deadly 60' and stuff like that instead.
  • We have let our kids (9 & 6) watch the Simpsons, but not any of the others mentioned.

    "c'mon, let's play..... I'll be Leela!"

love it! Futurama is way better than a lot of the made for kids rubbish, and her family watch it and talk about it together.

the latest series has been a fair bit more explicit / naughty - i think since comedy central or someone took it over so watch out

No problems with Simpsons or Futurama. I've never really watched the others, apart from South Park - which I don't think would be suitable for a young child.

My kids are 1 and 3 years old. I've never considered the Simpsons and Futurama as "adult" so they've seen both of those - mostly the Simpsons as I've hardly ever seen Futurama. Having said that, I can't remember when we last saw either of those. It's more an "if it's on tv at the time" type thing.

The other cartoons are definitely "adult" in my opinion - the language is appalling and I seem to recall that the plots are dodgy too.
