If I had kids I probably wouldn't want my kids watching the marijuana episode of The Simpsons (Weekend at Burnsies I think) :D

I was watching The Simpsons back when I was about 11/12 years old when they took over from Teenage Mutant Hero Turtles as flavour of the month. No problem. Some of the episodes are a little heavy for younger children I feel but really it depends on how mature and rounded the child in question is really. My parents were very big on allowing me to watch things with more mature themes, providing they had checked the content of whatever show or film it was first. As a result, growing up, I watched all sorts of things that were aimed at people older than me but I suppose I was a fairly mature kid.

Looking back, I think of the things we allow children to watch, cartoons like The Simpsons are probably the least of our concerns.

South Park and Family Guy are a little tougher. Some episodes of South Park would probably appeal to kids quite a lot (such as the Make Love, Not Warcraft episode) but then there are others that are clearly a lot more mature and deal with themes that young children probably shouldn't be allowed to watch but a teenager would probably appreciate the humour more, providing they're mature enough to understand it.

The good thing about The Simpsons is that it's pretty tame, but there's enough "above their heads" humor to allow adults to laugh, no problems letting kids watch that, Futurama is a little closer to the bone, but still nothing really to worry about (although i haven't watched the last few seasons). The others mentioned are 100% adult cartoons, not designed for kid consumption - rightly so, them lil critters get enough cartoons we adults need some of that too - general rule of thumb, if it's had more complaints in one episode than it's had episodes, it's not for kids!

sometime the kids might watch the simpsons if it is on tv. i think it on channel 4 but thats not a channel we normall watch.

my children have never asked to watch it, and if it is on don't really pay much attention to it.

but they certainly wouldn't watch any of the others, i personally don't like any of the others and i don't think their suitable for my little ones.

I don't think the Simpsons will turn kids into axe murderers or anything, its just the messages they promote - laziness, glutony, greed, rudeness, lack of responsibility, cultural stereotypes and so on... non of which is of interest to censors so its not going to keep it off air, but do we really want our kids learning to tell their teachers 'eat my shorts' ? not me.

The Simpsons is on at the same time as Waybuloo.

South Park is on at the same time as "Topless Dart" (well, when Topless Darts existed!).

Can't really put them in the same category now. I'm doubling pinkcloud's post with my 2yo.

I can't actually recall censoring anything that is on TV for DS.

He watched the Simpsons when he was younger and still occasionally watches Futurama but he is not a big cartoon watcher.

I watched many, but far from most episodes of Simpsons. I think you have to be only half watching if you think that it is promoting laziness, gluttony, greed, rudeness, lack of responsibility, cultural stereotypes and so on... As I see it, it is saying that those things exist, but one of the charming things for me about Simpsons is the ruthless logic with which consequences are developed from actions. In general [when I used to watch television], the thing which would cause me to object to a program most from a moral perspective would be to portray bad actions without consequences. So I never found a problem with Simpsons

My childhood tv consisted of king of the hill, crapston villas, beavis and butthead etc and I read viz! All from the age of around 5

My class grew out of south park by the end of primary

didnt do me any harm, besides have you seen some of the hip hop music videos, now they are explicit!
  • Yep. Doesn't worry me, my kids can tell the difference between real life and cartoons.

I drew the line at DD watching Shameless. Which isn't to say she is lacking the mental capacity to understand it or appreciate the humour.
