Flushed away for the sake of a car? I can not leave the house without significant pain any day the sun is out I can't even get to the bus stop without floods of tears, it is very very much for my needs thank you very much!

  • I dont know if this will help you , but when i became disabled and was unable to walk my son to school i spoke to the head and the local authority provided taxis for my son to and from school

I dont know whether all local authorities do this.

That is what I am hoping for and it's daft because both departments agree I need it but neither will agree it's them that should pay for it.

On the HRM issue the reason motability gave for it being fine for a car to be used by a carer living with the dissabled person for work was because it lessens the time that they are away from them for. In our case buses would mean him being gone for 2 hours a day more at least depending on where he is working each week.

Can you put an advert in a local shop window looking for another mum to take and collect the children?

I am a bit ambivalent about someone getting HRM but not using it for the main issue (getting the children to and from school) but looking for extra funding for that purpose. Surely the HRM payment is to alleviate the problems you have not to provide a car for your husband.

What part of my being housebound without access to a vehicle wasn't clear?

The childrens requirements are additional to my own but HRM is for my needs and that is what it will be used for.

I wouldn't want an un-CRB checked stranger taking them to school and don't know anybody where I live because my condition does isolate me with not being able to get out much by myself.

But you are presumably still housebound for most of the day even with the provision of a motobility car.

I think it is you and your husbands responsibility to get your children to school. Not something else to lay at the door of the taxpayer.

Funding is being provided to address your needs which in actual fact is not making a jot of difference except you don't have to pay for the car. Use the money you are saving to pay for somone to take the children to school.

The education authority just said that unless it's the child that is disabled then they won't help.

They're all going round in circles with eachother at the moment but at least I know now that it is possible and others have had this support also so there should be some hope in that at least.

    Thanks x

I am housebound until half past 4 when he comes home and only on week days. You have no idea what financial difference motability will be able to make to us and frankly neither is it any of your business but surfice to say that as a young male driver my partners insurance is £200 a month on it's own. A disabled child on HRM would be entitled to travel to and from school and to HRM also. Go and have a go at all those parents for not putting their childs HRM towards to taxi's as you clearly have nothing constructive to add to this thread.

Even if a child is disabled, it doesn't guarantee travel to school. All 3 of mine are disabled (one receives HRC and LRM, one does not receive DLA but used to and the other has not put in a claim at all - he is 17 and dislocates all over the place and frequently), 2 of them both attend the same school which was recommended by the LEA and support staff but they decided that because I took their recommendation and it was out of catchment, that it was my decision and ergo, no transport.

It has been tough getting them there at times, especially now my health has been on a downward trend (I require mobility aids), so I do sympathise with you on that point..there have been times when I have had to almost drag myself out to the car to take them.
We made it! All three boys have graduated, it's been hard work but it shows there is a possibility of a chance of normal (ish) life after a diagnosis (or two) of ASD. It's not been the easiest route but I am so glad I ignored everything and everyone and did my own therapies with them.
Eldests' EDS diagnosis 4.5.10, mine 13.1.11 eekk - now having fun and games as a wheelchair user.
