Nothing to add but echoing the other posts - you did exactly the right thing. You could offer to 'hold' the money for her, to help her save up for it. Brilliant lesson for her to learn, and if you feel guilty because she isn't working, think about how she would manage to pay you for the bed anyway....
Freecycle is good, charity furniture shops have stuff too, perfectly good for first-timers!Some days, it's just not worth chewing through the leather straps....

I too think you have made the right decision and not too harsh at all. If she really wants a bed then yeah, save for one and buy it. Why should she be asking you to buy it when she can save herself and then not even giving you the agreed amount. I also agree that it is not exactly a hardship to sleep on a matress on the floor.0

You've absolutely made the correct decision. It's not harsh at all.
Well done for saying no. If she wants a bed, then she needs to save up for one."One day I realised that when you are lying in your grave, it's no good saying, "I was too shy, too frightened."
Because by then you've blown your chances. That's it."0 -

I'd take money off them till they have half of it as a down payment, then order it for them... that way you won't be too much out of pocket when they have other priorities for their money.;)Member of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19

Don't worry, you did the right thing!

I don't see why you should be expected to buy a bed for her boyfriend's bedroom. And if she is anything like I was at that age, you will get a couple of £10 payments, several months apart and then she will "forget" all about it and it will never be mentioned again.
If they need a bed, they can save up for it. If he is working, surely they can find £25 per week and they can have the bed in a month?
I know that you feel guilty but remember, this is a valuable lesson for her. She won't appreciate it now but she will one day. And sleeping on a mattress for another few weeks is not going to hurt them, we've all done that!"I may be many things but not being indiscreet isn't one of them"0 -
I agree, you did the right thing. Don't feel guilty. They have to learn don't they? I was always taught that if I wanted anything I had to save for it. You are a good mum!The best thing you can spend on a child, is time.0

i think you did the right thing, she is old enough to realise that everything has to be paid for.
I was a mother myself at her age and had to learn to budget very quickly, I think it is normal to feel bad about this I would but hope that I would be able to do what you have done.
you will have taught her a good lesson for the future, if you cant afford to pay it back dont borrow it in the first place0 -
A small suggestion - most towns now have schemes for recycling furniture at low cost. All furniture is cleaned and checked before sale, just think how many folk have a bed in their spare room that has hardly ever been slept in. They may be able to buy a bed very cheaply that could be far better quality than the £100 new one they looked at.0
