Evicting rent defaulters is against their 'umin rights!

  • "I tried to get my human rights and all I got was this lousy visit from a housing support officer." It really is not something to get frothed up around the mouth about.

Not quite such a snappy headline either!

With evictions from social housing (including many still owned by the financially strapped Local Authorities) and lost rental revenue costing providers (and by default, us) £millions, I would have thought any action taken to reduce this expense would be a good thing. I'm surprised that the DM didn't cheer the decision!

This means acting in a far more pro-active way to resolve issues without recourse to the ultimate sanction that is eviction.

At what point should an adult human capable of having four children be deemed unable to correctly fill in a housing benefit form?

She is a grown up and should have dealt with the rent arrears in the correct way.

Whilst spoon feeding people is the nulabour way I don't think it's sensible in the long term.

In this specific case, the woman had already been through the homeless route previously (for reasons I don't know). We have a huge issue with adult illiteracy, chaotic lifestyles, substance misuse, domestic violence, mental illness etc etc etc and social housing geared to house those in most need, rather than those who pass credit checks. Having been through the homeless route once, is it so unreasonable to try and arrange a bit of support with some basic form filling to avoid the upheaval (and cost) for a second time?

Put like that, a lot of this is about bloody mindedness. The form was incorrectly completed due to either incompetence or bloody mindedness. It does not matter to me which it was. It is not acceptable that the council go down the route of being bloody minded on behalf of the rest of us when the matter could be easily resolved.

This is not about spoon feeding, it is about spending money wisely. It is amazing that in this case, the Daily Wail have been totally oblivious to the waste of public resource on the legal work to lose on a case which would have been dealt with one way or another by a couple of visits from a housing support officer. But then, the Daily Wail are not looking at this from a principled standpoint. It sells more papers to blow this completely out of proportion as a Human Rights from Brussels ate our Dignity scandal.

The irony is that those who have most to fear from a growing army of chaotic homeless illiterates with substance abuse, violence and mental issues seem to be those most keen to adopt the measures which will result in an increase in that army and its issues.

How about those who need to learn to read and write stop opening their legs and breeding all the time and get an education? It's about personal responsibility. If you can breed then you ought to be able to fill a form in.

I found this quote from Wikipedia (it has citations) on Dacre's views on the HRA.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Human_Rights_Act_1998#Journalistic_freedom
In 2008 the editor of the Daily Mail criticised the Human Rights Act for allowing, in effect, a right to privacy at English law despite the fact that Parliament has not passed such legislation. Paul Dacre was in fact referring to the indirect horizontal effect of the Human Rights Act on the doctrine of breach of confidence which has moved English law closer towards a common law right to privacy.[24] In response the Lord Chancellor Lord Falconer stated that the Human Rights Act had been passed by Parliament, that people's private lives needed protection and that the judge in the case had interpreted relevant authorities correctly.

It appears therefore that the Mail's stance on the HRA is simply because they want to print mindless tittle tattle about celebrities, rather than on any principled point.

Perhaps, in your own fevered dreams, a utopian world where Britain is populated entirely with little Evoke clones may seem like a reasonable solution. However, many of us have to accept that we live in the real world and deal with that in the best way possible.

Apart from anything else, if we were all like you, what would the Daily Mail whine on about then?

I find the whole story quite strange because normally its this sort of person who is excellent at filling in forms and getting as much as they can for nothing.
