Lost one of our cats today

If it's any help, it is just as possible that if you had left earlier, you would have seen him being run over, perhaps even as he started walking towards you - which would have made you feel far, far more guilty, even though it still wouldn't have been your fault.I could dream to wide extremes, I could do or die: I could yawn and be withdrawn and watch the world go by.Yup you are officially Rock n Roll

Quite true.
Or perhaps it hadn't happened by then, so you would have walked on by and might never have found him and he could have been picked up by the council by the time you came home.
It's one of those 'sliding doors' moments, but to be honest even if you'd been there you probably couldn't have saved him. The last cat I saw get hit died instantly. I was right there, I was with him in seconds and he was killed outright. The images have stayed with me and if that had been my own cat... well I don't know, it was hard enough when I didn't know that cat so goodness knows if it had been one of mine.
Guilt is part of the grief process.
So sorry for your loss.0 -
Thank you all- I know you're right.
Thank goodness I was on lates or I'd definitely have missed him. As I said in my first post, in a way I feel so lucky because we now have him in the garden, with us-and not be up all night wondering where he is (which we have done on occasion when any of our cats haven't come home all night). I don't know if they scan their chips or look at their collar tags when they take them away.
Somone got bopped yesterday at work when they said the words 'get a grip it was just a cat' Thank God my fiancee didn't hear them, as he's 6ft 7 and although he's a gentle soul-he wouldn't have thought, he would have flattened them. He's still really, really bad, but I showed him 'Rainbow Bridge' and it seemed to help him a bit.
Sorry to go on everyone, and thank you for letting me put it all into words. xRuaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x

I've had the "will you get a new one" comment immediately after telling a friend one of my cats had died. She's an ex-friend now. Some people really have no idea - it must be awful to have a heart of stone!0

Unfortunately some people don't understand that a real bond can exist between a person and an animal, a bond as strong as any between two people. Understanding how much it hurts when that bond is broken is totally beyond their comprehension. I don't think they necessarily mean to be unpleasant or insensitive, but they are lacking a range of emotion which us animal lovers have in abundance. Some animal owners don't have it - it's unique to people who tap into their pet's psyche. It's a bit like we have a sixth sense whereas they only have the bog standard five and so quite literally cannot fathom that a human/animal bond is not only possible but life enhancing and fulfilling and fundamental to happiness. Poor them, they are missing something very very special.0 -
That'sFabulous-he has a dog believe it or not..but doesn't like cats, he can't understand why we love ours so much.
Snowy- you're SO right! I suppose we should feel sorry for them, because they'll never know what unconditional love is like. And even though we're heartbroken now, we have 18 months of Milamber memories-and we wouldn't trade that for the world.Ruaridh Armstrong-missing since 05/11/11. Come home old boy-we miss you x
