Every RTC that occurs is the drivers fault. Every. Single. One. Even if the vehicle isn't maintained properly - that's the drivers fault (because I'm sure they can see the bald tires and can hear the metal on metal braking noise). Skidding off the road because it's icy/wet? Then that's the driver going too fast for the road conditions.

I once watched a fuel oil truck dump it's load on the approach to busy traffic island, 3 cars ploughed straight into the wall (on the island), they literally skidded a good 200-300 yards and could not slow down at all (from 40mph), it was worse than ice and completely invisible!

I don't think you can blame a driver for that!?!?!?

And what about if im driving along through the Welsh hills and suddenly a landslide drops a half ton boulder on the road just a few foot in front of me when im doing 50mph????

Or as actually has happened to me, a badger ran out inches in front of my car at 11:30pm, 60mph limit, approaching a bend at 50. It wrote my car off and nearly had me off the road into a ditch (the impact lifted the whole car off the ground).

You can't simply say that it's always the drivers fault, that is the statement of someone who's been fortunate enough to have not had an accident and is passing their "holier than thou" judgement on those who have.

    1. The stopping distance in the Highway code is for a Ford Anglia (Harry Potter car) IIRC, with drum brakes all round. Cars have of course evolved since then (though old cars are still on the road) so the BRAKING distance is less for cars, but the THINKING distance is the same as it was years ago (if we discount that the Anglia driver probably wasn't on a mobile phone!).
    2. Anyone who bangs on about it being absolute and illegal - ever recorded something off the TV and kept it for more than 2 weeks? Ever ripped a CD onto the computer?! Lawbreaker!
    3. Traffic means speed limits should be kept low - NO. People are saying, yes I speed if it's quiet - so the traffic argument goes out the window.
    4. The correlation between deaths on the road and speed limits - WRONG. Sorry, but people that die in car crashes are often ignoring these limits, so reducing the limit will have no effect. This also applies to all these 'dangerous roads' we hear about - if there are decent signs warning of dangers, there's no excuse. But don't get me started on potholes...

I'm quite happy for speed limits to remain low, and get lower. Not many people in this world possess the same excellent/amazing/legendary (delete as applicable) driving ability that I myself have, and I therefore doubt the roads would be safe if everyone is allowed to do 80mph on a motorway. Hell, most of the general public I encounter on the roads seem to barely know which way is forward.
Driving fast is one thing, but knowing when it is safe to do so is not something you can learn, you're born with it.

    jaydeeuk1,

What speed would you recommend people travel at on a 40mph road, so that they can account for such oil slicks as mentioned?

30? No, too fast, would crash anyway. 20? Still too fast. 10? Maybe. 5? There you go.

So everyone should travel at 5 in a 40 at all times, just in case?

People see it as "black and white" until something happens to them.

The speedlimit is the maximum safe speed for that section of road.
    No, just no.
Anyhow ABS doesn't decrease your braking distance, it merely allows you to steer while under heavy braking.
It does - on a good road a driver properly cadance braking will stop quicker, but if theres any grip differential, or the driver is just going to stamp on the pedal then any decent ABS system (i.e. a modern multi-channel system) will !!!! all over it.

On topic - I drive at a speed suitable to the conditions, Sometimes this is above an arbitrary limit, and sometimes it's below - it doesn't really bother me.
Nothing I say represents any past, present or future employer.

just to say im not old bill lol.. im a blood driver.. never come close to a crash yet.. unlike some of the police drivers out there i dont drive so close to other people's back ends that an accident happens
And as I blood driver, you're not exempt from the speed limit, so I hope you don't speed on blue lights either!
