Erm to often to be honest, pretty much everywhere, 30 zones I am pretty good though normally only do 30-35.
40 zones normally 45-50mph, 50 zones 55-60mph, But when it comes to 60 zones well erm let not go there ay.0 -

I disagree. I get just as frustrated as you in a Saunday driver queue but you should only ever go for it if you KNOW you can do the whole line in one go, for exactly the reason you describe.
Also, you must realise how annoying it is when the gap that you have maintained between you and the car in front is invaded by someone who's misjudged an overtake.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. Happy birthday to me...etc0 -

Hmmm, if your having someone pull infront of you because they as you put it misjudged there overtake, then that means you could have done the overtake? No?
Thats what I find most annoying some guy going along at 35-40 in a 60 zone and then there is like 4 cars all just following not overtaking when there is a chance to.
Then if I go and hop past 1-2 at a time it upsets people, but if they would overtake in the first place then it would not be a problem would it?0 -
^^ Sometimes when your stuck on a long B road behind 8 cars doing 30mph, you know full well that you'll NEVER get chance to overtake all of them at once. But it's the people that accelerate and close the gaps who are a nuisance.... I would do the opposite, I would actually brake to let someone in!!
This morning, on a dual carriageway, woman in old Vectra doing maybe 40 in a 50...... I'm in the right hand lane anyway and I cruise past her doing 50, I know the road is about to merge but I stay in lane to follow the arrows back as it merges, I look in my mirror and there she is accelerating up the inside about a cars length behind me (doing maybe 55-60mph) just as the road merges. She then comes right up 2 inches behind, leans on the horn and flashes her headlights!?!? I don't understand the mentality! im sure she had no intention of actually undertaking me.... I think she was just looking for a confrontation!!
People like this need removing from our roads! this was nothing to do with speed, yet the authorities would claim this was a safe way to drive?
Oh and before this thread becomes a warzone, the "overtaking or using both lanes is illegal" brigade can f*ck right off

No, if I'm two cars back and not in a position to overtake because of people faffing in front it's just tough. I don't expect to have my seperation gap taken from me by someone less patient (though I would give way to them for safety's sake).
Be assured, personally, if I'm in a position to overtake I will but I won't if there's a risk I'll have to cut in on anyone, even if it's a dithering granny. Even worse if there's a risk they won't let me cut in and I have to decide in a split second who I'm going to kill with me in the crash.Apparently I'm 10 years old on MSE. i think its because poeple have forgoten how to overtake and they think they own the road ,never mind the fools that get into lane 2 and sit thier in standing traffic for miles when lane one is clear (thats what they do round my city)and get unsett when you use lane 1 to go the same wayStrider590 wrote: »^^ Sometimes when your stuck on a long B road behind 8 cars doing 30mph, you know full well that you'll NEVER get chance to overtake all of them at once. Clear out of town roads & good visibility - Yes. Otherwise no. Do find some speed limits totally bizarre. Such as single track roads at the national speed limit when doing anything over 40mph is stupid. Or 200 yards at national speed limit between a 30 & 40 limit - why?
Other bug bear is people who obviously have no idea what the national speed limit is, who stomp on the brakes to get below 50mph when they see a speed camera, when the road limit is 60.Truth always poses doubts & questions. Or worse, on a dual carriageway where the NSL is 70.....
You get the entire right hand lane doing an emergency stop because numpty up front thinks the limit is 50!
But sometimes just sometimes, they move over just before the camera's to try to get you flashed, but they fail as you sail on past at 70

Historical reasons. In the past the only speed limits were 30 in "built up areas" and everything else was "derestricted" which is why the NSL sign looks different to all others. It used to mean, in effect, "no speed limit"
NSL was later changed to 60/70 depending on whether it's a dual carriageway, not that half the people on the roads these days know what a dual carriageway actually is*
With NSL it doesn't necessarily mean that the limit (or lack thereof) is the maximum safe speed, it means you must use your brain and drive appropriately.
In recent times, NSLs have been lowered as part of the "something must be done !!!!11!!1" mentality. The same mentality that results in a lower limit and a camera in response to a drunk driver doing 100+ into the side of a minibus full or orphans and kittens.
Single track roads see light traffic and generally the regular users of it know how to deal with it, where the tight curves are and what speeds are appropriate. When inexperienced drivers stray onto them, they usually tend to encounter one oncoming vehicle, then get so flustered that they crawl the rest of the lane. Either way accidents on these roads are rare.
As a result they never catch the attention of the councils and the whiners so they remain at 60.
What is particularly funny is when a DC is lowered to 50 and so the single track lanes all sprout NSL signs at their entrances. This is a case of typical government bureaucracy and jobsworthiness at work. Some planners take a map, highlights an A road and writes 50 on it. This job then gets unthinkingly broken down into it's component parts. Start signs, end signs, new signs for roads joining the A road which have a different speed limit, new signs for roads leaving the A road that now have a different speed limit.
At no point does anybody stop and say, "hang on a minute, leaving this single track lane at NSL looks stupid, maybe I should ask my supervisor" all they say is "hurf, durf, this jobcard says I put an NSL sign here. Lets just put it up because I knock off in half an hour and it's not my fault if the jobcard is wrong, I'm just doing what I'm told"0 -

What now? speed? brake and hope your previous spot isn't full? ram the egotistical tw4t off the road? or just sit and wait for a head on collision?
In an ideal world, nobody would speed, nobody would ever need to overtake and nobody would take their ego's onto the roads. We don't live in an ideal world!
I would let you in! in my older faster cars i would have been following you round people, in my more economical, slower, wife friendly car, i cant overtake as well, but I'd respect that you wanna come past so i'd try to make it easy as i can for you if i cannot overtake myself...0
