Has anyone ever tried a "sugar addict" diet? And how did you do?

Are you cutting it out on your own, or using the advice of the book?
I was hoping that others would have posted about whether they found it any good.
I've ordered Potatoes not Prozac & Sugar Addict's Total Recovery Programme. The Last Diet You'll ever do or need or whatever it's called is expensive, so I'll try these 2 first.
Several years ago I cut out bread & pasta, not for any particular reason & I found that after 3 weeks I went down 2 dress sizes virtually overnight. My daughter said that it looked as if I'd had a pin stuck in me, as I seemed to deflate. :rotfl:
Unfortunately I didn't keep at it, at the time I thought that it was flour but having read some of the stuff over the last couple of days I think it may have been sugar, or the starch converting to sugar.
I will see how I get on & also update this thread.
It would be great to hear of anyone else's experience of this theory.
I'm doing it on my own - might order the book too though. I guess it's always good to have some guidance along the way.
Your story has totally inspired me!!! I really want to lose weight and a sugar-free kick start may be just what I need. I'm going to try on some of my 'skinny clothes' this evening to see how much I need to lose, and to give me some motivation.
I feel so fat and lumpy at the mo, but it's amazing how much lighter I felt this morning having eaten no sugary crap yesterday. I just hope that I can keep it up. Dinner this evening will be salmon and vegetables, and then NO MORE EATING for the rest of the night. I am going to struggle not to drink alcohol though, I have a gig and a friend's birthday party to go to, argh. I guess I could go alcohol-free at the gig easily and just have non-alcoholic cocktails at the party. Going out must be a tricky one, I don't drink. BUT this afternoon I was thinking about what I would drink if went out, I thought so much that I had to go to bed. Stupid worry really as I neither go out or drink, :rotfl:
Good luck with your choices.
I'm only at the eat protein for breakfast stage, as I only started yesterday. I was hoping that the book would have come today, RM are probably treating it like 2nd class, boo.
I was certainly feeling more alert today then I generally do.
I'm confused by the stuff on the website, not too sure about when I start a journal, I don't think it's yet but I may get a book tomorrow & start one see if writing everything down helps.
Good luck everyone who's on it.0 -
hermum - LOL at your dilemma! :rotfl: Keep us posted on your progress.
I ordered 'Potatoes Not Prozac', can't wait to get it. I have lots of diet books, from Mayr to Perricone to Beyond Chocolate to the Get Real Diet... they all inspire me but clearly they are not working too well!!!
I managed to get by at the gig with just sparkling water... was so proud of myself! Party next weekend will be harder, but maybe it's just more social pressure than anything.
Anyhoo... weighed myself this morning and I have LOST almost 3lbs since the start of the week!!!!  I am so chuffed. I know it's probably all fluid but it's given me such a huge boost. I am going to carry on.
I was really bored by my dinner yesterday (a chicken breast with green beans) - I hadn't time to cook properly before going out, and also really wanted some carbs. But I resisted, and it filled me up all evening. I didn't eat again and woke up this morning feeling much lighter! Woo!

Well done on your water evening.
My book came today, the potatoes not prozac. So will have a good read of it later.
I thought that you were supposed to eat carbs with your meal, I'll be doing it wrong if not.
I'm only going to weigh myself once a week & hopefully will see a difference, if not the exercise it takes to smash the scales to little bits may lose some weight.
Although losing weight would be great as I've ballooned to a size 20 over the last few years from a 12-14:eek:
But my biggest motivation is the mental health side.
I'd love to be able to say to the shrinks, actually I'm not bipolar, I'm sugar sensitive :rotfl: I've never been sensitive in my entire life.0 -
Why does noone point out the obvious when it comes to losing weight. You simply need to eat less - if cutting out sugar makes that easier for you then great. ut if you cut out sugar and then magically think this action alone will make you lose weight you are wrong. You need to ensure you are eating less than you need.
However, if you wish to cut out sugar you really need to just go cold turkey. Sugar has no nutrional value and so i don't wasyte my calorie allowance on it. I only prefer to put real nutrition into my body. I found that thinking of sugary foods as being foods for children helped.
You mention eating sugar sandwiches as a child (me too). Would you do that now - no, because you are an adult now and know it is not good for you. Think of crisps, sweets, cakes etc as foods for parties and for children (although it is bad for them too!). I just decided i wanted to be a little bit mature when it came to my diet and it really helped.
I now have a very grown up dessert about once every two weeks, i enjoy it but I don't need anything more.0 -
I think everyone knows that they need to eat less energy than they use in order to lose weight.
This isn't a particularly a weight loss diet, or indeed even about just sugar but how the way different foodstuffs convert to sugar & the effect it can have on some people.
I'm very pleased for you that you have found what works for you.
Hopefully the people posting on this thread will also find what works for them.0 -

Thanks, I was so pleased with myself. :A
Let us know what you think of the book, can't wait to get mine.
Re eating carbs with particular meals, I'm just trying to cut out all starchy/sugary carbs at the mo... no idea if PNP recommends doing it differently but I am desperate right now and really need quick results!!! And it's simpler for me just to cut out all of them and eat smaller portions in general. Why does noone point out the obvious when it comes to losing weight. You simply need to eat less - if cutting out sugar makes that easier for you then great. ut if you cut out sugar and then magically think this action alone will make you lose weight you are wrong. Good post, all true.
Of course, sugar is highly addictive and this is why people struggle to give it up. For me, it usually takes a good few days for my body to adjust and my blood sugar to stabilise. What I want is to be like Mireille Guiliano (author of 'French Women Don't Get Fat' - http://mireilleguiliano.com/) and exercise complete discipline in my food choices. I want to eat good quality food in smaller quantities, only have occasional treats and choose them wisely.
Hopefully cutting out carbs will help me. I am also exercising every day - walking or cycling usually, although I will do some stretching and weights this evening.

Hi,
I love reading the forums and just decided to have a read of this thread, and now have bought the book reccommended. i have never really been over weight, but I think I am suffering depression, well I know I am, an I just don't want to go down the anti-depressant pills route, so hopefully this book might help. I am drawn to all things sugary rather than a balanced meal, and I do snack all day then don't eat what some folk would call a "proper balanced meal", so here's hoping that will all change.
thank you to Mics Chick for starting this thread, and thank you to Ocean sprayK for reccommending the book.0 -
wuzzypoo - I tend to do the same sometimes hon, I could live on chocolate tbh.
Anyhoo... 1 week into the low-carb diet for me and I am 4lbs down!
WOO HOO
I can feel the difference already - my stomach is not bloated any more and I feel waaay better.I'm totally convinced. Another couple of weeks of this and I hope to be seeing dramatic results.
It is very hard sometimes - I miss bread a lot and meals have become a little boring. I just seem to eat meat, fish, eggs, cottage cheese and green veg and I am getting fed up of it lol. There is only so much protein you can eat, it is impossible to overeat if only consuming protein IMHO. I have also had headaches and felt quite tired at times. But it's worth it to see the weight coming off. I need a good kickstart to my weight loss to give me the motivation to carry on.
How's everyone else doing? xoGet to 119lbs! 1/2/09: 135.6lbs 1/5/11: 145.8lbs 30/3/13 150lbs 22/2/14 137lbs 2/6/14 128lbs 29/8/14 124lbs 2/6/17 126lbs

I stupidly ignored the book saying that you must not do it all at once, I didn't plan to cut out all sugar and or simple carbs but did until Saturday. That's mainly because I didn't really have anything startchy in.
I started feeling as though I was coming down with flu on Friday & felt really ill I slept for 12 hours straight, got up for about an hour & then slept again for about another 6 hours. I usually only sleep for a few hours, sometimes as little as 2 the most is usually 5 hours in a 24 hour period, so I got almost a months sleep in a day.
THEN read more of the book & have now started just on the eat breakfast for a time as suggested, I guess I did learn though that I obviously do have a sugar sensitivity. I ate some sugar puffs & started to feel better almost immediately, so as the book says baby steps & one step at a time.
I think for me it's going to take a while & I have to resign myself to it not being a quick fix. But if over a few months I can level myself out then it will be worth it as so far I've lost over 10 years of my life with mental health problems.
If your main motivation is weight loss & it's working for you that's great & hopefully it will continue to work for you.0
