Does anyone know if you can use the Tesco vouchers (£10 off when spend £80) to buy kindles? I had an online one which I dont think you can use as groceries only but picked one up in store today and can't see where it says can only be used for groceries? Thanks

It my be worth people checking out luzme.com which does online ebook price comparison and a watchlist.
  • I just bought a basic new Kindle from Tesco using their £10 discount offer to new customers spending £50 on Tesco Direct. I spotted the voucher code when I searched "Kindle" on Google Shopping; it was one of the sponsored links at the bottom.

The voucher code was TDX-RPMW, for use at tescoDOTcom/kindle. You have to order it to collect from a Tesco store.

Looking forward to getting my new toy!

ok, it's an expensive way to get a kindle, but for those of you who might be travelling to the United States on holiday this year, you can buy the kindle "with offers" for $79 which, having purchased one on a trip to florida last week, came out at £54 on my credit card statement.

You can register the US kindle to your existing or new amazon.co.uk account and it doesn't seem to care - i checked with an online amazon customer care person before i bought. My wife bought the 'touch' version (also "with offers") for $99 which worked out at about £70 i think. Again, works fine on her UK account and replaces an older keyboard model which she broke on clearwater beach (how convenient...)

The "with offers" thing means you get what are effectively adverts but only at the "off" or standby page (in place of the pictures of famous writers - the kindle never really turns 'off' but only people who have them will really know this) and a tiny little banner across the bottom of the main menu where you select your book - they never interfere with the reading activities at all. They are usually for kindle "book of the week" offers or other amazon promotions. I don't mind them at all. If you can't live with them then you can pay $30 more for the "no offers" model of each kindle type - this would make the basic about £73 so still a saving, but not as good as the offers model, obviously.

hope this helps - i'm delighted with mine.

Thanks for that, gkerr. That's exactly what I wanted to know. I want a Kindle and my mum is travelling to the US later this month. I don't mind adverts and the cost difference between the US and UK is too large to ignore.

  • I was astounded to find out that my Kindle did not support Library eBook lending here in the UK (but it does so the States).

So I set off to find a cheap ebook reader that was compatable with Public Library Lending. You need one that supports Adobe Digital Editions.

I finished up buying two manufacturer reconditioned Booken Cybook Opus eBook Readers on Ebay. They cost £31 delivered and come with a three month warranty which you can extend at extra cost. I bought mine from the Ebay shop XSonly IT Computer Store. First class service and very pleased with the product which I've used for a month now without trouble.

The Cybook is 5" eink Ebook reader that is very light and easy to use, it even comes with two covers.
