Tesco mobile - HELP!!

About a year ago we bought our son a pay as you go Tesco sim card on a pay £10 get £40 credit (capped) basis. The salesman himself stated that it was ideal for kids they wouldn't be able to exceed the £40 credit. In December we bought our son a new mobile, I took over his old sim and we went back to Tesco to get him another, on the same basis. The only difference was that the current offer was pay £10 and get £30 credit, which we said was fine as our son had never got anywhere near to spending the £40 on his old card. A few days ago his phone was barred, we contacted Tesco mobile today and were horrified to be told that his bill was £514!!We are awaiting a callback from the Tesco resolution centre (having already explained the situation) but would really appreciate any advice on this matter.

Thank you in advance.

Well your lad must have some idea what he was doing with the phone, premium rate texts?
  • But if it was pay as you go, how could he have run up a bill?

Its not possible to run up a bill on a Tesco Payg Sim .(Pay £10 get £20 credit giving you £30).Once the credit runs out you cant use it until you top up.

Did you actually commit to some sort of contract for him ?

Well, their T&C seem to be pretty clear:
11.3 Each time you use your Mobile Phone and you incur Charges, the Credits associated with your Account will be reduced by the Charges incurred. It is up to you to decide how much Credit to load onto your Account. If your Account has no Credits you will still be able to receive incoming Calls, but you will not be able to make outgoing Calls or access any Content.
My understanding is that it is their responsibility to stop everything when the credit reaches zero.
  • Well he's only 11, and no, there were no premium rate texts, Facebook and YouTube mainly, but defo nothing dodgy.

That's EXACTLY what we thought, hence why we left him to it :(

Friends son ran up huge bill (hundreds of pounds) using Youtube but that was a contract phone.

I would have thought that PAYG should not have allowed this
  • Thank you for that. We now have to wait and see what they say (which could take until Thursday), but it will be handy to be able to quote that :)

Technically it should not be possible to run up a bill on a normal payg phone. If you have not signed up to a contract it sounds like yet another Tesco Mobile xxxx up !
