Can I book holiday in next leave year now?

    I can guarantee you that this is not "company plolicy", it is a lazy line manager who can't be bothered to deal with it now.


    Wow, would you refund the OP their costs if it IS company policy and he has to cancel?
    It seems perfectly reasonable that this COULD be company policy

    Er NO! Goodness me, you are so wet about this. She has not been informed it won't be granted. That would be a refusal, which she has not had. The idea is to put the manager to the point of making a decision, hence writing and stating that it will be assumed to be granted.

    So the manager refuses the leave request and states that if the OP re-applies at the start of the new leave year (1st April) it would be reconsidered.

    You're still no better off, with the bonus that you have got a decision out of the manager.

    I don't think I'll ever understand why some companies run their holidays from 1st April. Makes much more sense to run from 1st Jan in my opinion.

    Your employer can refuse permission for your holiday as long as they give you notice which is at least as long as the holiday requested. So to refuse a request for a week's leave, they would have to tell you a week in advance.

    DVardy, I have highlighted for you the bit where the decision has been made not to accept the holiday request at the moment.

    You can do all the writing you want but the manager has made it clear that they will not be accepting holiday requests until the new year, you can assume all you want about a no reply but it doesn't mean it has been accepted and to presume it has could lead to all kinds of trouble in the future.

    Because a manager decides not to decide about holiday until the next year doesn't make them half rubbish, that is just the way they decide to organise the employees holiday and so be it. If you noticed if you could be bothered to read my post fully I did say it was a bit crappy but advising the OP to do what you suggest is a bad idea and only going to cause more hassle for the op.

    Because a manager decides not to decide about holiday until the next year doesn't make them half rubbish, that is just the way they decide to organise the employees holiday and so be it.     It doesn't make the manager half rubbish, it makes them total rubbish. Managers are paid to make decisions. This one plainly is not making one - saying that the holiday year has not started so an answer cannot be given is just totally inept. Any place I have ever worked in, if you needed dates for a holiday, you could get agreementover the next year, in or out of the current holiday year - either you would have your holiday according to a rota fixed years in advance [and freedom to swap], or it would be booked without hesitation.

    You need to bear in mind several things. Firstly, the traditional holiday booking season actually begins on Boxing Day - so it s not unreasonable to deal with holiday requests for the coming year from January. Secondly, the new holiday year begins 5 weeks from now - it is high time to start holiday approvals and even to press people to indicate their plans. If people are not allowed to book until the new holiday year actually starts, this will eliminate all planned holidays to the end of May at the earliest, this increasing pressure on the remaining summer weeks. This is plain bad management.

    The OP needs a decision and should not be embarrassed about pushing for one. I don't think anyone should be deferential to a manager over indecisiveness on such an important thing as annual leave. It is perfectly reasonable to expect a decision on a holiday up to 6 months in advance. Your suggestion of adverse consequences for the OP as a result of pressing for a decision is possibly realistic - but it is an absolutely absurd reason for avoiding making a totally reasonable request. If the manager is going to be an ar5e, let them be seen to be an ar5e. Your annual leave is too important to allow them any modesty over their sensitivities.

    current employer was from april 1st to march 31st but chnaged last year to jan to dec, it is easier to remember when it starts/ends as i was always asking when it ended

Saying to someone that they cannot book holiday until the beginning of the new year is not really any differant to an employer saying you cannot book holiday for April.

    I do not agree though that sending a letter is the way to go, like others have said the risk is probably to book the holiday and then request holiday from the 1st April or if the OP wants to be safe then they need to wait 1 month and a week....its not that long really.

    There is no guarantee the letter forces the situation and as the OP has been told they could just refuse to make the decision until the beginning of the new holiday year and then what do you get?
