I went to my neighbours 18th party a few months ago and took my kids along (14, 12 and 7) - it was really nice disco with lots of kids of varying ages there, as she had invited family members and wanted her young niece and nephew there too. But obviously lots of adults there too.

It was at a football social club incidentally.

No I don't think it's unreasonable. My 2 are (almost) 2yrs and 5 1/2yrs and I would not want them at a party with 18yr olds drinking and being silly. I must admit i'd never take them anyway i'd have mum babysit and have a kid free night (which doesn't come by very often!). My thinking would be the same if my kids were older, and impressionable too. Having 12-16 yr olds maybe at a party with drinking 18yr olds is trouble waiting to happen (possibly). Stand by your ground, you'll have enough people to worry about. Enjoy the party.

  • You've inspired me to start getting sorted now. It's my daughter's 18th in November too...
  • Hi all, thanks for all your replies/views on the adults only theme.

This is now not up for debate within the family, as the manager from the club has called me up and told me that they will not allow under 18's at all.

I am sure that those with children can find a baby sitter for a few hours, it's not like any of them are babies any how, they range from 5-11 yr olds.
  • Hi mintymoneysaver,

What date in November is it?

  • My entire year at school got banned from a local hotel after it had been found people sneaked booze into a 'spring ball' (because apparently we were too posh for a Christmas party!) when I was in Year 10 aged about 15. So I can understand why some places are reluctant to do it.

That said I've worked at 18th birthday parties in the same hotel, for a mixed group of family and the the teenager's friends, and yes there were a few who got hammered but generally it was relatively tame (although we did always ask for ID and refused to serve people who were drunk).

£300 is not a bad price though, especially with DJ and bouncer thrown in - at the hotel I used to work at it was £250 to hire the hotel's DJ so I think you've got a good deal there!

No under 18s at 18th birthday parties seems pretty common though, both at places I've worked and when I've been to cousins' 18ths.

  • Yeah, i am really happy with this price minerva_windsong, just got to arrange all the catering.Have been looking on the internet just now and the prices are really good, dd said she just wants the usual cold finger buffet.

Must admit i am not complaining that there will not be children at the party, not that i have anything against children, had 2 of my own lol.I find that you just can't relax while they are there, all they seem to do is run around the place at full speed!

I'm trying to sort my daughters as well - nightmare, think we have the rugby club, doormen - one of whom is her godfather, disco and food - cost all about £500 including staff discount - still waiting for confirmation though.
Mama read so much about the dangers of drinking alcohol and eating chocolate that she immediately gave up reading.
