Incredibly slow internet connection on PC but netbook fine!
Comments
-
Was the PC turned on still when you did the laptop test? If so and it was malware using a lot of bandwidth that would impact the netbook too.
What wifi adapter are you using on the desktop (PCI or USB) ?
If PCI is the antenna mounted in the clear on a length of coax or hidden at the back in a rats nest of other cables?
If USB are you sure it is in a USB2 connector and have you tried mounting it in the clear on an extension lead?
Is this a change you spotted immediately or did you just decide to do a test and see the difference? The reason I askis because the most common cause of slow WiFi is a poor signal and you say the desktop signal has always showed up as poor. Alternately is there a chance that it is now even worse than before?0 -

Please run COMBOFIX
http://download.bleepingcomputer.com/sUBs/ComboFix.exe
Shut down your anti virus
Follow the simple instructions it gives
Post the COMPLETE log it creates here (Split into sections if need be) ~ if there are loads of 'SNAPSHOT' pages then leave them out
If it comes up with a RENAMING error then RIGHT click the exe file and RENAME and call it QWERTY (Making the complete file name 'QWERTY.exe') Or SAVE as 'QWERTY' on download
(If no log comes up or you lose it, COMBOFIX.TXT can be found in C drive)
.............................................................
Download CCLEANER
http://www.piriform.com/ccleaner/download/slim
Run the CLEANER scan (UNTICK 'cookies')
Then run the REGISTRY scan (Backup the registry when it asks)
.................................................................
Hows the net now? Please post a fresh hijack log to make sure Nortons gone:idea:0 -
Right I am going to do some of the clean up actions this evening but it appears that my internet has speeded up now following the MALWAREBYTES and HIJACK programs that I ran. I ran a speed test this morning and it returned the following:
Download 2.88 Mb/s
Upload 0.61 Mb/s
Ping 57
and another this evening which returned the following:
Download 2.3 Mb/s
Upload 0.57 Mb/s
Ping 570 -
I have a PCI adapter and yes it is sort of hidden down the back of the computer desk with all the wires - there is a sort of gap in the wood at the back and I have tried to position the aerial towards this to help improve the signal.
I also have a a USB wireless adapter which is on a lead and can be clear of the wood out in the open. I purchased this a long time ago (ADDON 802 11g Wireless USB Adapter) but I'm not sure I ever got this working and wasnt sure if it was causing conflict with the PCI adapter.0 -
As I said my internet connection seemed to be running alot faster but I would remove all the crap from my machine in any case. I have now downloaded the norton removal software and run it successfully but for some reason since I have done this my internet connection has gone even worse than it was before?!?!?
I keep losing my connection and it has said so signal (never done this before). I just ran a speed checker test and my speed is down to 0.08 M/bs.
Does anybody know what is going on?!?!0 -

I cant get COMBOFIX to work - it gets stuck updating. Any ideas?0
-
Ok I have managed to remove Norton, removed a number of entries in Hijack (as advised by Alienrik) and have now also ran CCLEANER.
Seems as though my ridiculously slow internet speeds early may have had something to do with somebody using the downstairs computer although I wouldnt have thought that this would result in speeds of 0.08 Mb/s???
I can't get COMBOFIX to work but have run Hijack again and it reveals the following:

if you've only got a 2.5 meg connection, speedtest results on your pc will be slow if someone else is online downstairs, esp if they're watching any kind of streamed video, etc.
Also, have you ruled out wifi congestion ?? download inssider on the "slow" pc
http://www.metageek.net/products/inssider/
and see if there are any other routers operating on/near to yours...if there are, change your router's channel to a less congested one. Note, run this when a. your pc is getting "normal" speeds and b. when it is on go-slow. You may find it's someone's router that is, for example, only switched on when they're home from work/school, etc.......Gettin' There, Wherever There is......
I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple
0 -
getting them sort of speeds sounds to me like somone else is using your router
What happens when you 'try'to run combofix?:idea:0
