I suppose it may be complicated for the op a little by the fact that if they go with Android, they still need to decide which hardware manufacturer to go with. I've got an HTC desire Z (the one with a real keyboard I'm typing this on and 2yr warranty), but some people prefer the Samsungs, or other makes. In fact just about anyone who isn't Nokia or Apple do Android handsets, so the choice of designs and styles is gigantic, see what suits.

As for which is /better/, well if you spend the same on an Android phone as on an iPhone, I think you'll get a better, more fully functioned phone with the Android, and you don't have the curse of iTunes to deal with. You can download real MP3's straight from Amazon cheaper, and there are some awesome apps that just aren't created for the iPhone market (want to script/program your phone for instance?). And I think you will see Android becoming the dominant platform despite the Apple phones having 18 months head-start. Right now they are very evenly matched.

Oh, one last thing, I've never had an HTC drop calls by holding it 'wrong' then blaming the user. 'Nuff said.

I must admit that Android has got a very large market share now. ITunes isn't an issue - already using it. Not sure if the lack of flash will make a big difference - I'll have to try using the laptop with it blocked :D

Currently I'm thinking of getting either an Iphone 4 or Android powered one on Three's ONE plan and its the same per month regardless of which option I take with the Iphone having an upfront fee however I can probably get that waived.

Three is pretty much the only viable network for online 3G in my area - Orange are abysmal and its quicker to use 2G than 3G on Orange here as they admit the cell site is oversubscribed. O2, Vodaphone are not competitive.

    Time to hit the reviews....

True Android at present is not better than IOS4 .
But no way is the IPhone worth £150 more than a HTC Desire or the like . Android an OS not a brand and you have a load of makers and price points to choose from .
Apple locked down one phone every componet approved by Apple which makes for a tighter integrated phone .

Android market and apps doubt if you would not find one you needed .

But really you need to try the phones and also be aware that Smartphones of all types eat battery and can rack up high data use .

Samsung Galaxy S user watched BBC Iplayer last night then read a book on my phone about to use the GPS to look up a location followed by a search for low petrol prices on my journey .

Surprised no-one has mentioned the issues which make iPhone a non-starter for me - no removeable battery and (the main one) no removable/expandable storage.

  • A quick word in favour of iOS, you will be able to use itunes like with your current ipod classic. May be worth waiting a few months for the next iPhone though, even if its to get the iPhone 4 cheaper.

Can't comment on CS, especially considering that there are multiple vendors, however there is a massive Android community out there, to help with Android related problems and they provide software support as well
But can you take your phone to them, say 'here is my phone there is something wrong with it', and have them just hand you over a new phone? I value that, I don't care if there is a massive community ready to help, I have no wish to fix a phone myself.
Also, software support isn't needed for an iphone, because they are so locked down (which I know many people don't like but it doesn't bother me).
That is totally and utterly wrong. They can quite easily play games and have good screen quality. On another forum, someone said that they wanted the HTC Desire HD as it was far superior and better than the iPhone 4
iPhone 4 has a higher resolution screen than the HTC Desire HD, and considering the screen for the HTC Desire HD is is much bigger, this will make the pixelation more obvious.

Re: games, I don't have an Android phone obviously, but I had got the impression from pocketgamer.co.uk that games get converted to Android later, and fewer get converted, and fewer big publishers publish games for Android.
All I see on topics like this is 'Android has lots of free games' - I don't want free games, it's usually quite obvious why they are free, I want games that are good enough that the developer can sell them. Two examples of the type of game I mean, with pretty graphics, I'm sure you can find more if you are interested: Infinity Blade (£3.49), Sacred Odyssey (£3.99).
Anyway, even if the same games existed, the screen for the Android phone have lower pixel density, so they wouldn't look as good in my opinion. Sacred Odyssey mentioned above looks much better to me on my iPhone 4 than my iPad, despite the iPad having a larger and higher resolution screen, because the iPhone 4 has much higher pixel density.

I didn't like Google navigation, but yes that's available too, I just listed the one I like best I wasn't trying to list them all...

re: storage, 32GB is more than enough for me, especially as you can 'easily' (well, you have to use itunes which is horrible) move data off the phone to your computer if you run out of space.

tbh I don't care which anyone buys, I don't have shares in Apple. Just giving the OP my impression of the iPhone 4.

There will be a lot more Android apps and games compared to iPhone in the future with current trends.

(with the research I've had to do for university ;) )

But not so easy to carry your computer around with you as it is to carry a microSD card if you want more than 32GB available.

  • Complete non-tech-expert here.

When I bought my phone it HAD to have flash, for match betting! (See GIOL if you are confused). Carphone Warehouse let me try the Nexus One (HTC Desire clone-y thing) and even place a bet, so I could be sure the sites I need actually work.

Apparently Android-language is very easy to programme, so you get LOADS of free apps....

Ooo, and I agree about the battery life when I use the phone hard. But my ever-loving DH bought me one of these.....

Andriod all the way for me. Lower TCO - cheaper handsets, more free apps, more open, freer -

Remember Apple Vs Microsoft in the olden days - Windows on any hardware vs Apple OS on tied hardware? That's where Apple vs Android is heading

Lol more free Apps dont make me laugh the iPhone has probably at leats 4 times the ampint of Apps than Android. There is also a vast majority of ones that are free.
Smile and be happy, things can usually get worse!
