OK, now that I'm officially sick to death of using my personal phone for both personal and business, I'm on the look for a second phone for myself.
I've been a Nokia stalwart since the mid 1990s however their phones nowadays are cack - I can barely stand to use the 5800 I have now so that's becoming the business phone
So with costs for contracts and phone being equal, what is the better phone to have - iPhone or one running Android and if so, which? I'm not going to be getting a gazillion apps so paying for them isn't an issue but a good web browsing experience, a good email client and GPS is a must have.
If its of any bearing, I have an Ipod Classic in the car with the Ipod kit for my Clarion head unit so I can pipe music from it and charge it in the car. Said Clarion also has Bluetooth (inc BT streaming support) a USB interface and an aux jack so I could play music from an Android phone however not control it from the head unit.
What are the pros and cons for both?

My starter for 10 Hammy (watching University Challenge) I have an HTC Desire, cracking screen , good email clients (Yahoo App, GMail App, and their default one which I use for GMX/and other POP3/Imap servers i have) THe sync app for HTC is pants but I got free MyPhoneExplorer which syncs with Thunderbird (and Outlaw) does lots of other syncing stuff too.
Cons Battery life if used a lot but most are the same. Firefox is not quite there yet (IMHO) but Opera and Basic Explorer as supplied is ok.4.8kWp 12x400W Longhi 9.6 kWh battery Giv-hy 5.0 Inverter, WSW facing Essex . Android mobiles are available on just about every network. I have a Galaxy GT series on '3' for £20 p/m. The iPhone on the other hand will cost you £39.95 p/m regardless of network because that is the price stipulated by Apple as part of the deal to supply the handsets.Never Knowingly Understood.

There have been a number of threads asking the same question so a search might be of benefit.
I have a Desire - great web surfing and email integration, very good (free) GPS/Navigation, and the phone works too!
Battery life and screen nowhere near as good as the iphone 4
I do not buy Apps and I don't like or use itunes0 -

I'm not sure where you got that information from but I can assure you it's wrong. My iPhone 4 contract with Orange is £30p/m and I have a friend with a 3gs Tesco contract @ £20p/m
To answer the original question my personal preference was the iPhone (which is why I went with it replacing my Blackberry). Having looked through iPhone, Android and Windows mobile phones the iPhone won me over mainly due to the HD screen which was just cut above anything else I'd seen. Part of my decision was based on apps too but as you say that doesn't really affect you.0 -
Andriod all the way for me. Lower TCO - cheaper handsets, more free apps, more open, freer -
Remember Apple Vs Microsoft in the olden days - Windows on any hardware vs Apple OS on tied hardware? That's where Apple vs Android is heading0 -
Android! OK, maybe it's a little slower(literally just a little) than the iPhone(this is the cheapest Android phone on the market at £100, the more expensive ones can even be faster!) and maybe you don't have the massive amount of apps that are there for the iPhone, but you are saving your self a lot of money in the process. Who here really actually needs an iPhone rather than wants one? They seem to be more of a fashion accessory rather than any thing else.
Another thing; I loathe Apple, but I congratulate them on their marketing. They are able to boost profits by a massive percentage when offering the same or inferior hardware at an inflated cost. The only thing that I like of Apple is that they have solar batteries in their new iPhone, but is it really worth paying around £750 just to get a mobile phone with solar panels? I could buy two netbooks or 7.5 ZTE Blade's or 1.5 business laptops or 1 gaming laptop at the price of an iPhone
This is sort of true if you think about it

Flash video anyone?? not on the iphone.
Android all the way for meLive each day like its your last because one day you'll be right0 -
iPhone 4, if you don't mind the extra expense. Notice the replies, to this and other topics about the same thing, saying 'Android is cheaper' rather than 'Android is better'.
I've had no problems with the GPS (for a satnav app, TomTom is great), I've go no idea about the email client as I use the web interface for my email. The web browser is OK too, I've had no problems with it. No flash, though. But some flash-heavy websites have free apps to avoid this problem eg BBC, YouTube, with non-flash videos.
Apple have great customer service. I had one partly-dead (the red sub-pixel was dead, the other two colours worked) pixel on my iPad, they swapped it for a new one no questions asked. I didn't even buy it from an Apple shop. They also let me switch on an iPhone, and check it for dead pixels, before I had bought it.
If you are not interested in screen quality, and do not play games on your phone, then an Android phone is probably the way to go though.0 -

Nothing wrong with the Desire screen, amoled , and mine is not the "HD" version. The GPS also works well missed that on my first post.
