OOps, turns out Lloyds is closer. Does anyone know if they give full visa debit cards??

Yes, Lloyds TSB will provide you with a full VISA debit card of the same sort Barclays issue - one that can't be used off line i.e. on train or at Pay @ Pump stations

EDIT: Having banked with LTSB and Barclays I rate LTSB much more highly. A good choice, albeit possibly not quite as good as HSBC.

I see. Oh well, it'll only be for two years then I'll be 18! I'll have to remember to buy my tickets beforehand though! :o. I'll be popping into LTSB later today, it's a small one in my area so shouldn't be too busy. :) Thanks for helping me step into the big world that is banks.

Just make sure to run your account well and be very careful when using your debit card.

    Key points to remember:

It is your responsibility to ensure you have enough in the bank to cover any transactions, not the banks responsibility to stop them

There can be a delay of upto a week between making a purchase on your debit card and the funds being taken

You will see an "Available Blance" which is your current balance less pending transactions - this is more accurate but still might not show debit card purhcases you've made in the last three days. Should, but isn't 100% accurate

Being a minor you don't need to worry about charges so much but you should start as you mean to go on. Run the account well and you will have a partner for life allowing you to buy your first car and house. Run it badly, and you'll be sub-prime in the banks eyes before you even turn 18.

But that's my little rant over. Good luck with the new job & such :o

    Hey guys, quick update.

I went LTSB yesterday, queue was ridiculously long so I came back home. Today I was in town anyway so thought I'd try out Barclays. Went in and the atmosphere was really nice. The lady told me that no one was available till 1 so I did some window shopping for a while. Came back I was taken downstairs (it's a really nice glass building with about 3 floors), and some lady took me to a booth and set my account up for me. She did ask me some personal questions like what I was planning on doing at Uni, I thought she was just making polite conversation, but then she went to tap at the keyboard for a minute and it dawned on me she was writing this all down!. Anyway, she told me about online banking, and standing orders and DD. She told me if I should have the money 24 hours before the DD is due and if I don't have it in I'll be charged £8 a day! All in all pleasant experience, although it did feel like I was being interrogated or maybe that was the blank expression on her face that made me feel like that lol.

Good to hear that your account with Barclays is opened.
  • Hi, don't think Young Persons are charged anything-2 of my 'young persons' have inadvertantly forgotten to cancel standing orders to their Monthly savings accounts and had the payments returned through lack of funds, no charge was mentioned or applied. The charge is £8 per transaction anyway(up to a max of 3 I think) and not £8 a day.

I found when I was your age, I always took out cash and used that, unless I had a weird amount I use to get paid £27 for my shift, so used the card on £7 worth of stuff then withdrew the £20. (£27 for a full days work! Forgot it was so little! Thank god I'm over 21 now)

Good to see you've got an account opened up.
