Will I need my parents with me? Barclays Young Person's Account

My mum is extremely busy and I need a bank account as I'm going to get a job in the summer but the website makes no indication of this??

http://www.barclays.co.uk/Currentaccounts/Youngpersonsaccounts/YoungPersonsAccount/P1242557963846

Thanks in advance :)

If you are 16 years of age or older you should be able to open this without their consent :o

EDIT: You'll need to get your provisional driving license and have a passport to open an account if your parents aren't with Barclays, or one of the two if they are.

Thanks. I do have my provisional license and passport to hand, as none of them are customers. So I'll go down there this week. Thanks for you input. :)

Also, do you know if they give a full visa debit card or is it an electron one? The website says "Barclays debit card" goodness knows what that's a pseudonym for.

I know that when I had a young persons account it was Electron, but this was before "Online VISA" cards were introduced.

With the availability of Online VISA cards these days, they should not issue an Electron, but a full VISA debit - albeit one that won't work on trains or at Pay @ Pump stations etc which take your money without first verifying whether you have it to take.

They'll be able to verify 100% in branch but I don't expect you'll be issued an Electron :o

One quick question, do you know if I'd need an appointment? It's just that the phone number is a premium rate number but then also there is no alternative for my local branch and I really cannot be bothered with being passed from person to person . Would it be OK to just walk in? It's a relatively big branch I'd say.

You can certainly just walk in but don't go late afternoon as they may send you away.

If you go in in the morning you're pretty much a shoe-in being able to wait for an advisor to see you. Probably be 5-30 mins depending on how busy it is.

The debit card you will get with the Barclays Young Person's Account is a Visa debit card (full authorisation), not Electron. They have phased out Electron. When you get your card, the first 4 digits should be 4658. The debit card will look like this: http://www.barclays.co.uk/cs/Satellite?blobcol=urldata&blobkey=id&blobtable=MungoBlobs&blobwhere=1259956575387&ssbinary=true

An appointment is not necessary. Walk in and expect to wait for a while, depending on how many customers are in the branch.

There is another account which pays higher interst, which is the Lloyds TSB under 19's account. http://www.lloydstsb.com/current_accounts/under_19s_account.asp . Have a think about it. :)

Thank you for that. I'll have a look. Although Barclay's is closer.
