I will definitely be on the lookout for this on my next trip to our local flagship ASDA.
When I was just a lad, I remember my Mum doing these fantastic oxtail stews. Lots of veg' and the oxtail cooked long and slow, until the meat and bones parted company on their own.
I always thought that it looked like you had just cooked a small dinosaur!
Now that I am living with her again, it would only be fair to return the favour one weekend soon. The acquisition of wealth is no longer the driving force in my life.0 -
I remember watching an episode of come dine with me when a lovely lady called hazel won after cooking what looked like a fantastic oxtail stew type of thing.
Well I've never cooked oxtail but I've just found some on offer so I really want to try and cook it.
I've looked on line and it says that for copyright reasons they couldn't post the recipedoes anyone remember this episode and happen to know the basics for this recipe?
Thanks

Someone on here a while ago mentioned this, and was pointed in the direction of a different recipe, which the poster said was quite similar. I'm sorry, I'm actually veggie, so never kept it, but it stuck in my mind because I watched the episode too, and had thought it looked fantastic. I know you're now thinking how could a veggie think that, but I used to cook for a living, and can still appreciate good food, even if I choose not to taste it. Sorry I can't be more help than that. I'll try a recipe search and see if I can find it.

I remember that too. Think she called it a 'Gut busting stew!' I've looked on the site but it only shows an oxtail and prune casserole. Don't think she had prunes in it.0

I have made this recipe, it is YUMMY!!! and i will be making it again soon, i didn't add the prunes tho as i don't like them.
if you use the link JackieG posted and scroll up to post two there is a link to the original recipe.

Try Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall's River Cottage Meat Book. Oxtail and neck of lamb both make delicious rich stews from what is normally a cheap cut of meat. The secret is long, slow cooking, to release the flavour from the bones and make the sauce rich and gelatinous. Oxtail stew is good if you add a small amount of orange rind to the pot about half an hour before serving.0

As this has fallen from the front page of OS, I'll add it to the existing oxtail thread to give you more recipe ideas

Hi I have copy and pasted some of the recipes about the Oxtail as I was lucky enough to buy a bunch of five pieces tied together with string a few weeks ago reduced to 51p from Sainsbobs. Now, do I stick it complete with string into the slow cooker or take it apart. The receipes sound really good, and I am now waiting for some really chilly weather so I can stick them in the SC overnight0

I have bought some yesterday in Sainsburys too. Going to put it in
the slow cooker on Monday for tea- after reading this thread I am
looking forward to it0 -
I'm on the lookout for a tried and tested pressure cooker oxtail soup recipe. My pressure cooker book has no mention of such a thing. I don't want the hob or oven on for hours so thought pressure cooking might be ideal?
Oh, one other thing - It'd be nice if it tasted like Heinz!! It's just one of those foods that reminds me of my childhood, off school with a cold, curled up on the sofa watching rubbish tele eating a bowl of Heinz oxtail soup.
Thanks.0
