what can I say??? it was absolutely delicious!:j I took it out of the SC at 6pm and the meat just fell of the bones, binned the bones and didnt even need to thicken the gravy as it was lovely and thick anyway. Didnt taste anything like oxtail soup ( I had it in my head that the meat would taste like that?) anyway I will definately be looking out for cheap oxtail again - DH said the only thing that would have improved it would have been to serve it was dumplings ( I made it with mash and crusty bread)
Thanks again for everyone's input;)0 -
Can i just ask how much you are all paying for oxtail be it by the lb or kg i dont mind. I only ask as i noticed Asda butchers counter had it for £4kg where as my local butcher wanted £7.98 per kg. Just wanting to get a rough idea as to what i should be expecting to pay.:j Was married 2nd october 2009 to the most wonderful man possible:j

I saw ox tail in a circular bundle for the first time this week in my butchers, I have had it in Spain once and it was lovely.
Tempted to give it a go - slow cooker or oven ?
What do you use to make a stew?0 -
claire - oxtail pays for a long slow gentle cook so slow cooker would be ideal as the best way to eat it is when it has become slightly glutinous and the meat is ready to fall off the bone. I throw in whatever vegetables I have, lightly browning the meat first but chopped carrots, onions, celery, celeriac, swede are regulars, plus some crumbled OXO cubes. The more vegetables you add, the better the flavour, and then you can just eat it as a meal in a bowl with a chunk of French bread.
In a slow oven it needs at least 3 hours and you may need to check the liquid level as some tends to evaporate, and it might need topping up.
I've got a large Le Creuset caserole pan and these days I cook my Oxtail caseroles on the slowest gas hob, with the pan placed on an Aris simmer mat (from Lakeland). It uses less fuel that way, and also for some reason, the liquid doesn't evaporate like it does in the oven.0 -

Hi
Oxtail Stew is delicious - if you like oxtail! it needs long low cooking, or you can make a lovely oxtail stew in 40 minutes in a pressure cooker. If it has been cooked for long enough it is meltingly tender. Not particularly cheap, but you can make it go a long way unless like me you gobble it all up like a greedy-guts!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
I cook it twice, once to soften off the bone, then again, adding the meat, bones removed to vegetables in a stew or as a pie filling (essentially the same as my stew but with a puff pastry lid).
Its fairly fiddly, but IMO one of the best meaty things in the world, tender, meaty, rich and warming.0 -
I luuuuurve oxtail stew. It is fairly fatty meat, which is what makes it soooo tasty, and it needs long, slow cooking unless you have a pressure cooker. It is even nicer the next day. I like to put parsnips in my stew instead of, or as well as carrots. I serve it as a stew on the bone (though it should be mostly falling off), coz sucking out the marrow is also yummy!
I am drooling just thinking about it!:drool:Trust me - I'm NOT a doctor!0 -
Yes sucking the bones is the best bit, but I didn't like to say that, it sounds a bit !!!!!ish!
Edit :Oh I forgot, for some reason the site does not like the word G h o u l !!Think big thoughts but relish small pleasures0 -
I made it last year, I did it in the slow cooker and it was so tough and chewy, so if you make it I suggest another way of cooking!
I also found it extremly expensive! My farm shop is very good in price, but I paid a lot for it (£8 a tail) and chucked it all away!We spend money we don't have, on things that we don't need, to impress people we don't like.
