You are a star! Thank you. I only have a small freezer so the tongue will follow after the tail is eaten, its in someone elses freezer! Will definately be looking up the recipes for that when the time comes.
Debt free = December 2010...as of March 2006 it is now January 2010..... as of December 2008 it is now December 2009 :j hopefully sooner!!
:jDEBT FREE:j January 2012, took longer but I got there, all by myself, through sheer hard work and pride!
  • I feel very inspired to try an oxtail after reading this thread, they sell them at my local butchers, not sure how much they cost though. How big of piece do you think I'd need to feed 2 people?

I bought and cooked some the other day - delicious! Quite fiddly to eat though, despite having cooked for hours in the slow cooker.
I bought about 1lb / 500g and it was fine for 2 people - not too much, not too little. Cost £2.50. So not the cheapest meat, by any means, as you get so much bone in with the meat.

Queen - Our butche normally serves a whole chopped oxtail tied up in a circular bunch with string. We normally buy one for two of us. As BB says, there is a lot of bone but the idea is to cook it on the bone, which helps to make a delicious gravy. Cut any surplus fat off, or cook it the previous day and allow it to cool so you can scrape the hardened fat off the top before reheating. I use this surplus fat for making fatty oats for the birds so they get a decent meal out of it too. It needs at least 3 hours long slow cooking so that the meat is tender and just gently falls away from the bones. It makes a delicious all-in-one meal for a cold day if you include chopped carrots, onions, swede.

I looked at Oxtail at the weekend in Mr M. I fail to understand why something that was regarded as 'offal' is so expensive. In fact I can't understand why some cuts of meat are priced as they are. THe oxtail was £5.99/kg. belly Pork was nearly as much, it's all skin and fat, but pork shoulder was £2.99/kg, admittedly on offer, but £4.99 at full price. THat's all good meat. 50p/kg less if you buy it as a 'roast', but then you do have some skin and to cut it up yourself. Not difficult.

maybe the cost of the cheaper cuts is going up because they are in higher demand?

    Hi all

In my quest to save money and cook from scratch more I've been buying wierd and wonderful cuts of meat when they are reduced in the supermarket, to try them out without spending a fortune:D

I manahed to get 2 ox tail pieces yesterday for £1.80....but what the heck do I do with it LOL?

I do have a slow cooker so would it benefit from going in there?

Thanks for any advice, I bet there are some recipes on here already but I'm struggling to search cos 'ox' is too short a search term and 'tail' brings up all sorts of posts :rotfl:

My local Asda have been selling Oxtail recently, which surprised me as I haven't seen it around for years.

I bought one pack (two biggish chunks and two smaller ones) to try them out.

I coated them in seasoned flour and browned them all over in a small amount of veg oil in a heavy bottomed pan. Put them into the Slow Cooker and added some onions, carrots, swede and celery with oxo stock, celery salt and dried mixed herbs. The gravy thickened itself (maybe to do with the flour or because of natural gelatine in the bones) and I served it with mashed pots. Have to say it was melt-in-the-mouth. Next time I will add some pearl barley - just bought two packs for the store cupboard :).

Stock and veg left over was blended, allowed to go cold and frozen to be Beefy Veg Soup for another day.

One pack of meat = 2 meals for two people = very good vfm :j.

Saw the Oxtail on the shelves again this week so bought 2 packs this time ;).
