Recent attempted breakin - unsuccessful

I had an attempted breakin last tuesday.

Upvc back door was brilliant, still deadlocked top and bottom. stupidly i left my ladders in shed and toolbox padlocked up.

The lad/guy could not reach bathroom window as house is 22ft high.
Anyway the door is being assessed on wed, should be repaired, and im having a new solid gate fitted with lock and key.

I live in a terrace and now want to get a cctv system that I can link to my laptop or tv. I am budgeting but simply want a dome camera infared installed next to my daughters bedroom window, so it can pick up from near my car and in the yard as my yard has 6ft walls and one at the front of the house and thats it really. If not that then an alarm in the house.

The guy tried the kitchen window and back door and never succeeded. not much plastic damage.

why not just get an alarm system fitted, and motion sensor spot lamps, cameras will only help 'after' the event

I would definately recommend an alarm, you could also get a wireless sensor for it and extend the system to cover the shed. At the very least a dummy ALARM box would help. If the scumbags see an alarm they generally pass by to an easier target, if not they soon run when it goes off. I wouldn't be without one.
  • Im not so sure of alarms.

What about when burglars set them off on purpose to see if anyone is at home or not.

If not they then rob your house.

    In my view...

    1. Ignore CCTV camera etc. If they see the camera they will wear a hoodie to hide their faces and also with some camera the night time image is not that great where you can identify the burglar.

    2. Alarms. Do have one fitted if you know for sure someone will respond. I have heard an alarm or two go off in the past and found no one takes notice. If you are close with your neighbours then they will respond when the alarm goes off.

    My advice is..

    1. Looking at the door why not have a gate fitted over the door? Make sure you have a quality lock fitted.

    2. Install security grill over the window. It can be inside or outside. The one inside could be fixed or sliding one.

The above websites is what i found after a quick search.

One thing to remember is that the burglar might think you have something valuable to hide inside.

    The decision is yours...
Problem with having access to internet is that i get asked by many to solve their problems :( Well at least i learn something on the way :D

I'd agree about the alarm - either get one installed if you know your neighbours will check it out should it go off or get one that is connected to a central - however they cost a lot more...
If you don't have anyone that is likely to react to the alarm going off then don't bother... one of our neighbours have an alarm and it does go off from time to time - a little irritating as we can't get in to turn it off and they might not be home for a long time... However when it does go off we check the house and doors etc and then call or text them.
Neither our house of the other neighbour have an alarm... but then we have a GSD cross and nextdoor has a police dog ;) We find they are both fairly good deterrents hehehe
If you get a chance have a look for the program called "beat the burglar" - there are some pretty good tips there for how to deter burglars to be honest, and often your community police team will come out to you and advise you too :)
CCTV... unless you get a decent one then don't bother - the image quality will tell you nothing more than "you got burgled..." The images are too grainy and frankly not worth bothering with. You also have to be careful as you must ONLY film your own property - if you accidentally cover part of your neighbours property on film you're potentially falling foul of privacy laws...

  • Wouldn't bother with CCTV. I had a camera fitted some time ago after a breakin on the car. Don't get me wrong, it works and is still setup but rarely plugged in. I found I either needed a PVR for it to constantly record or have it set as a motion sensor but would constantly go off as it was out the front of our house.

I'd recommend a decent alarm, and if your away, get one that can call your mobile/parents/whoever so your aware if it goes off. It will also act as a good deterrant as if there are 2 houses, one with an alarm and one without they will pretty much always go for the one without. Get a box out the front or back and get a dummy box on the otherside of whichever you chose.

Your aim shouild be to make it impossible for anyone to get into your house, not watch a playback of how they did it. Alarms, outside lights and good locks would be far more useful than a camera.

    I agree with this.

We had our shed broken into 18 months back. We have put up security lighting and changed the shed and gate (needing doing anyway) to one that has a proper lock rather than a padlock.

Your local Police or Neighbourhood Watch should be able to give you some ideas.
