Sounds like an urban myth. BG have a policy to pay back credit balances of over £100 when they re-assess at the end of the year.

How does anyone get to be £1000 in credit

Still another chance to knock BG heh!

Yeah, must be an urban myth, as I know both British Gas and NPower automatically send cheques out every 12 months if the customer is in credit.
It's PAC not PAC Code, it's MAC not MAC Code, it's PIN not PIN Number, it's ATM not ATM Machine, it's LCD not LCD Display, it's DVD not DVD disc... It's no one not noone, It's a lot not alot, It's got not gotten... Panini is the plural of panino - there is no S!!

  • I have to pay BG £10 a week on a payment card. When I got my last statement from them, I was £101 in credit so I called to ask if I could stop the payments for a while, or pay lower payments for a while.

They said no! To call back in February... Can they do this, d'ya reckon?

Just imagine how much of our money the utility companies have crammed into their bank accounts by using these underhand methods of charging,it must run into tens of millions.A great way to get an intrest free loan, over estimate your customers usage for the year and charge them accordingly. However, my utility company wanted to charge me £30.00 pcm elec/gas dual fuel, (I live alone ) I bargained him down to £20.00 by DD

Actually just the opposite is true!

The utility companies are owed far more money from customer's debit balances, than they are in credit with DD accounts. - according to the regulator.

This is almost inevitable in times when prices are rising. Look at the number of people who post here who are hundreds and thousand of pounds in debit.

Anyway what is "underhand" when you are informed how much you are to pay by DD and that sum cannot be changed without notifying you. You sign a DD agreement and if you don't like it - don't sign or end the agreement.

I SWITCHED FROM BG RECENTLY AND HAVE BEEN TRYING TO GET MY DIRECT DEBT MONEY BACK FOR ABOUT 4 WEEKS ( £127 POUNDS) ACCOUNT WAS CLOSED SO REFUND SHOULD THEN BE ON THE WAY. MY WIFE HAS PHONED TWICE , EACH TIME TOLD (I WILL PUT IT TO THE ACCOUNTS DEPARTMENT FOR YOU NOW.
AFTER WAITING SHE PHONED AGAIN ONLY TO BE TOLD THAT NOTHING HAD BEEN DONE BUT WILL GET IT TO YOU WITHIN 5 DAYS.
5 DAYS LATER NOTHING SO I PHONED THEM ...

We were in the same position as you in that our gas account was in credit by £120+ when we switched away from BG.
It took 5 phone calls and 6 weeks to finally get the cheque sent to us. That got put into the bank a.s.a.p. I can tell you! ;)
At the same time I was also asking for the final electricity bill to be sent to us and that took one more phone call to sort out as we received conflicting bill amounts on two bills over two days. That whole scenario took 7 weeks in total.

    It's all over now......:D .... I'm so happy.......we're free!

I have never had a refund of credits from bg.
At the moment I am £250 in credit and on my latest bill they want to increase my dd by £20 per month. As I use to have 6 people live in my house I now have 3 so my gas usuage is decreasing.
Today I called them & tried to get it sorted out, well would you believe their computer system was not working (how strange a freind had the same response recently)
I told them if they could not sort it out today then I would cancel my direct debit .
I have a life & can not keep waiting in call centre queues for them to bother to help me.
I have cancelled my DD, I expect they will want to talk to me now!

If paying by DD, then you don't usually get a refund of credit, you have to ask. It's when using pre-payment meters you usually get the refund when you receive the end of year statement.

However if you cancel your DD, BGas will put you straight onto their non-discounted quarterly billed service - The highest price tariff in the country.

  • i just think its disgusting. i pay for my gas by online bank and my electric is pre-payment. i think its disgusting that these big companys that you are all with cannot refund your credit, whether its pre-payment or direct debit or any other form of payment its still cash and still money you have all earned. to me its stealing and daylight robbery. thats your lots money and all of you should beable to claim it back.

have you lot tryed energy watch. they maybe able to help or contact watchdog off the bbc.

if it was me i would go to town and try my best to claim that money back if it was myn.

on the news the other day they said about us lot are paying to much for our electric and gas and we dont know about it.

these companys no matter how big they are they are still robbing you lot and others and charging us lot to much for our gas and electric.
