How easy is it to keep same phone number?

My vodafone contract has ended and I have found a cheap deal through mobiles.co.uk (via Mobile Phone Checker as recommended on this site).

The new contract would still be with Vodafone as the provider but would be billed via mobiles.co.uk. What chance is there of me keeping my old number, as it would be a lot of hassle for me to change it?

Thanks

Sadly not - you'd have to take a new line out. You can only transfer your number between operators.
  • You will have to pac code your number out to a payg sim on another network and then pac it back into vodafone when signing up via the 3rd party
  • Its not easy but is doable I have done it several times with Orange

Get a PAC Code from Voda, Port it to a PAYG O2, Orange, T Mobile etc. 24/48 hours later request a PAC from them and Port it back

That's not completely true. O2are happy to transfer your number without going through a PAYG SIM.
  • Using this method involving the PAYG method - I don't have a PAYG phone, so would I need to buy one?

It seems a bit silly that Vodafone will happily let me take my number to a new network, but won't let me keep it by staying with them through a thrid party. Surely they're better off if I'm still with them, even if not directly?

Its how it is (same with ALL networks apart from 02 which do PAYM to PAYG) you can pick up any PAYG sim (you dont need a PAYG Phone) at any newsagents or online where you can get them FOC

Techhead - 02 will NOT do PAYM to PAYM have tried and they dont
  • Thanks - have just requested a free SIM card from O2, have also requested PAC code from Vodafone, so am going to try this out!

Let us know how you get on. I think it's crazy you can't just transfer your number between the same network.

If you need instructions for porting over you can find them here:

and then when you need to switch back:
