Then they could input that number into their line checker which would give a rough estimate of speed on your line.
(It would also probably go into their records for future marketing calls, lol)
Nonsense - sorry... They can "check" your potential line speed by simply using your postcode or even just your CLI (your phone number) - again they do NOT need your phone to check if you are eligible!
It's not 100% but the only otherway I know of to get a reasonable speed check involves a BTopenreach engineer and the TalkTalk yahoo's most certainly won't have been able to run those checks just from your phone handset as it involves checking noise ratios and lots of other technical stuff
I can think of no reason for them to ask for the handset to be honest... sorry.
I would strongly suggest that you print out this FREE "No Cold Callers" sign
Personally my view is IF they genuinely worked for TT (they might... but seriously would question their training if that is the case!) then they were either useless or cowboys! Or just as likely... they were trying to keep you entertained one side of the house... whilst someone was checking out if somewhere was open in the back...
ETA - Sorry just realised I mis-read - you were kind of on about the same thing and them wanting the CLI to check the linechecker... I blame a long day and not enough sleep LOLDFW Nerd #025DFW no more! Officially debt free 2017 - now joining the MFW's!
My DFW Diary - blah- mildly funny stuff about my journey0 -
TalkTalk employ these people through a supposed marketing company, kids mainly with no training at all being promised the earth, its either TalkTalk or promoting charities on the street.

Thanks. Have to say even if I was interested I was put off by the way he interacted with me.0
