Thinking of you Shegar. Be selfish for a while and concentrate on getting yourself well. It will probably not be in your nature to think of yourself first, but try and hopefully you will start to feel stronger.

Good to hear from you again too and glad that I'm not the only one making unrealistic demands on myself.

Yes I still go to Normanby every Frday morning, usually with a friend but if not there's always a pleasant bunch to walk with. I'm sticking to the 2 mile because whenever I try the 3 mile I seem to come back limping for some reason.

I've also found that joining the Heart to Heart bunch works well for me with up to five walk leaders and one with a defibrilllator! They're all going at a suitable pace for those recovering from heart attacks which suits my arthritic knees admirably.....

After the walking, lunch and the other people we meet really adds to the enjoyment of the day. There's nothing as therapeutic as a good laugh or as inspiring as some of the people in the group whose 'can do' attitude to life sees them achieving amazing things in the face of disability. It puts my problems into perspective anyway.

I do other walks as I can and build walking into as many days of the week as possible, including asking OH to drive me a few miles away from the house and forcing myself to walk back. OH says' do you really want to do this?' I say No but I have to for my own good... feel better when I get back home even if I'm whacked. That 'to do list ' definitely gets put back 'til tomorrow.

If you ever make it to Nomanby I'm the daft beggar who dances with my two poles to walk leader Vick's car music . I reckon I'm warming up and if everyone's laughing at least they're not being miserable!!!

((Shegar)) big hugs. I am so very sorry that you've been driven to edge and beyond. I hope that when you've had a chance to rally you'll come back to the thread and that the carers' groups which others have mentioned are able to support you.

It seems that all-too-often, the position of Social Services is to let the next of kin struggle until they themselves collapse under impossible strain before they offer any realistic support. It makes my blood boil. Some of my more distant relatives, a couple in their eighties with no children, had a situation where he was very ill with dementia and, after a hospital stay, Soc Serv wanted him to come home to be cared for 24/7 solely by his 86 y.o wife. She could barely walk, see, hear, lift and really ought to have been cared for herself. Sadly, their 60 year + marriage wasn't of the happiest and they had been making each other miserable for decades. She was bloody-minded enough to stand up to them; she told them they could bring him home but that she wouldn't be there; she'd move out and check into a B & B. They didn't call her bluff and found him a place in a specialist care home. She lived a few more months before dropping dead in front of my Mum and he lived on in the home another year or so. They're buried in different villages btw, at their own expressed wishes, that's how much they didn't get on.

:( Most people have more loving relationships and will take themselves to the edge and beyond to be carers and that's admirable but we're all only human and there are limits........

:) Anyway, I didn't get my afternoon session of internetting yesterday at home after work as I had to detain, in converstation at a City Hall wicket, a drug addict wanted by the Police whilst the management called them and we waited for their arrival. Afterwards, the boss wanted to know what the hell I'd managed to chat about for 15 minutes......:rotfl:Hey, I can talk to anybody and making small talk with the chemically-challenged was interesting but tiring. Tell ya, if I'd realised working in local government was so interesting, I'd have gone in for it years ago......;)

 Today, I am allegedly on "first call" with a tradesman for a company who have been messing me around for the past 5 months and broken numerous appointments and caused me great inconvenience. Told them, this is the last time I make an appointment, they do it today or Game Over, I've had enough.

:) Which means, since they can't tell me what time they mean by First Call and I'm currently wearing sleep shorts and a teeshirt (but I have combed my hair...) I should get washed and dressed. No trademan, no matter how annoying his employer, deserves to be subjected to me in my skivvies......:rotfl:

    ?

Just to confuse matters - well it confused me! - what I was told I had was variously called chicory or endive by different peeps and 'twas loose-leaved and purplish (but 'twas from a source that often provides somewhat unusual vegetables I've never come across in t'supermarket). Have just checked out Google photos and it seems to be called either chicory or endive for the same vegetable and I found loose-leaved green ones like that purpley one I had.

.......errr.....and I DID braise it and 'twas nice:D

 Well, today is The Day of Idiot Boy's possession hearing and I've had butterflies in my tummy for the past 48 hours. He and the g.friend were home yesterday evening, laughing, chatting and seemingly feeling no strain. Not bovvered and not packing. Had an email from the H.O. sent yesterday lunchtime but read this morning saying that, barring any 11th hour activity by I.B., the case goes ahead. H.O. has asked to be updated by TOCD with the result asap it's known. Even if the council wins legal possession it's highly unlikely to be possession with immediate effect so could be a few more weeks to suffer thru first. Don't know if I'll know anything today but if anyone has a couple of spare digits, please cross them for a second and send positive vibes winging my way......I'll update y'all with the news as it happens.

Best of luck, I have my fingers crossed. If he's evicted it'll save me the bus journey down to yours in June.

I'd stay in the jimmy jams. I've been surprised that the level of help I've received from my friendly neighbours has increased since they've seen me more in my jamis. I don't know if that's because they think I'm a bit mental and need more help, but I prefer to think it's because they see me as relaxed and approachable.

I have to mention my good news - I have an oven! A gift from a neighbour renovating their unit, so the same as the one that died. So it fit in the space and was fitted easily (and FOC) by my electrician neighbour. Only this one looks in better condition than my last did when I first moved in four years ago! All of this was kindly facilitated by another neighbour who came and told me about the renovation and suggested I go round and beg. So much baking will be going on tomorrow to thank all concerned. The other alternative was a complete kitchen overhaul, so this is a real relief. I nearly got my second hob fixed too by cannibalising the one he'd removed, but sadly the element that I needed had also broken on his! Not to worry, 1 hob is fine.

Friendly electrician neighbour also helped me get the broken tumble drier down off the wall, so that can go to the tip soon and be replaced with a nice drying rack (since it was situated handily above the water heater in the cupboard).

All in all, a cracking day.

Now if I can just fix my sofa and the light fitting, I believe I would be on top of the world!

See, I'd call the pale green one pictured chicory, and I'd call the purple one purple endive. At least that's how they are here I think.

Sorrees - GreyQueen - but I really shouldnt have burst out laughing at the thought of you managing to keep the druggie talking for 15 minutes....:rotfl::rotfl:. Tisnt easy ter do - and I guess you dont have spates of shyness to contend with - but I reckon you just kept him laughing - like you do us sometimes:D

Fingers crossed re Idiot Boy - I've been reminding myself at intervals "Tis tomorrow this is happening - all being well". Thinking of you.

Dont blame you re the workman and his missed appointments - I have had to be pretty sharp before now that there isnt a resident housewife here chez ceridwen - its just me and they are trying to waste my precious annual leave from work and I'm not going to allow it (my holiday time is supposed to BE holiday time - and not at the mercy of anyone who cares to just waste it having me sitting round waiting for them:mad:). I do make it plain - if it looks like they will try and muck me around - that I am leaving the house at x time regardless...and I dont leave workmen on their own in my house. One thing I do is I allow workmen the exact same "being late" time as I do everyone else (ie 15 minutes). At that point - I ring their "home base" and ask where they are and, if I'm not promised they will be round sharpish, I tell them that the appointment will need to be re-made, as I am about to go out - and I do...

    ********************

SHEGAR - Echo the thoughts from others to take care of yourself. I've been horrified to see how little help peeps get when they need it from Social Services sometimes and been told by a former Social Services person that "nearest and dearest" have to make it VERY plain indeed that they arent going to step into the breach and do Social Services job for them for the S.S. to get on with doing it themselves:mad::( - rather than treating a relative as a resident unpaid carer whether they want to or no/whether they are capable of it themselves or no.

I'd call them bth chicory in UK...no idea if that's correct or not! but rather like I'd call cabbage''red or white cabbage''. Never had it braised. Grilled dry I find it really really difficult. Salady I find it ok to good.
