Gailey, I am so delighted to hear your boy has arrived safe and sound, please make sure you take it easy and get some rest. Let your mother clean, and your OH pull his weight, and look after yourself. I tto had to laugh at how quickly he arrived, sounds like something we should have expected from you, you just don't have the time to hang about in labour, waiting. I am also glad you got the home birth you wanted, even if it was a bit of a surprise. What a lovely start to the day.
Welshcamper, glad to have you back, hugs and love to you and yours, too.xxIt's what is inside your head that matters in life - not what's outside your windowEvery worthwhile accomplishment, big or little, has its stages of drudgery and triumph; a beginning, a struggle and a victory. - Ghandi0 -
My friend and I will need to do justice to the wonderful tea we always get after such an event up in Yorkshire. They really are the most generous in hospitality and it'll be 10,000 step walks (3 1/2-4 miles/day) for the next week after that - watch this space......
I was wondering how many miles 10,000 steps equalled...thanks..
Am waiting for more time - so I can walk regularly. Googlemaps have a very useful feature on there for calculating distances - so I input two distances:
1. I used to walk regularly as a teenager. Which was from parents' home to school and back again and, later that day, from parents' home to part-time evening job and back again.
2. When I was unemployed for a lengthy period some time back - I used to walk to and from a particular destination twice (sometimes even three times a day) where I was involved in voluntary work whilst awaiting getting another job.
One of them meant walking 6 miles in a day to/from destinations. The other was 8 miles a day to/from destinations.
I put both those "daily walks" into Googlemaps and asked for directions (by walking) and back came the distance and estimated time taken. So I now know how far I personally can easily walk in a day without even thinking about it - ie 6-8 miles (just in specific walks to and from destinations - not including general "mooching around"). When I was doing the regular walks to/from volunteering work I found that weight just dropped off me - so much so that I was worrying if there was a "medical" reason for it...but nope...'twas just all that walking..
So - my plans, when I have more time, will be to walk an average 6-8 miles at least every other day. I might need to work my way back up to that (as I'm not quite as fit as I was when unemployed) - so thought I'd start by picking a distance (4 miles in my case) that is on regular bus route and walking to it and then gradually getting a bus back again for a shorter and shorter part of the "return trip" until such time as I can walk the 4 miles there and 4 miles back without thinking about it.0 -

Congratulations on Marley's birth and please take the advice to take things steadily! You need to recharge your batteries a bit to say the least.

Thx for that useful tip about Google maps and walking- never thought to use that facility when putting postcodes to Multimap - generally when driving somewhere unknown. The organised walks I do with the Council scheme have trained walk leaders who've already mapped the distances but for the days I'm out on my own that would be very handy,
Pedometers are generally useless for accurate distances or fall off. I bought a Tanita that hanga around my neck to keep track of my steps which does help for the food/exercise diary I keep for my dietician.
Only other gadget I could find was a wristworn Garmin GPS jobbie - Problem with that was it doesn't work under cover i.e. woods and buildings and worst of all cost £120!!
You must be very fit to walk 6-8 miles a day- I know that's nothing to the Ramblers but I'm stuck at 2 1/2- not quite 3 miles at one go. I have to keep telling myself that it's only 18 months since I had to use two sticks from the bedroom to the bathroom. The spirit is very willing but my 62 year old joints won't play ball at present! So good luck and go for it gal!!
I just keep plodding on.........0 -
