Has anyone here turned down a job/resigned from a job because the petrol was costing too much for it to be sustainable?
I recently applied to take foreign students/teachers here, but I'm very concerned about he daily petrol costs of dropping off and collecting (part of the deal of you are not within walking distance). I'm going to do a test run at that time of morning next week and see. Its not very lucrative in this area...less than I got in London, where I also didn't have to factor in petrol -or the time- for collecting and dropping off.
In anycase in might be moot, as our dying boiler, which I've struggled through winter not to use, ahas had to be on because its rusted through a plate and water has needed to evaparate....well, last night it stopped, so time to haul it out. No idea what we will replace it with, but I can't keep it in the house bleeding water out into the kitchen. Our immersion doesn't seem to get the water very hot, so not sure whether we'll have hot water satisfactory for students either!
Thanks for the PM that invited me to this thread.0 -
greent has a point - there is a much lower part-ex/sale price for business-use cars as well as extra insurance etc. Depends on the car though - the smaller engine the better, but many companies stipulate a minimum-size car as it's representing the company. In the late 80's, when fuel was much cheaper, my very first car was a Citroen Dyane (the 2CV's 'big' sister). With an engine smaller than many motorbikes - less than 600cc - I was getting something like 70 miles to the gallon. As I was doing an awful lot of work miles I could pay my mortgage with my petrol expense profit! I don't think the HMRC allowances have changed enough over the years to reflect modern fuel costs. I'm sure I was getting something like 28-30p per mile in the 80's and petrol was something like £1.70 a gallon which I think is about 40p per litre.0

Morning all!
I have come to pick your brains, which is such an unhygenic phrase. Late this afternoon I will be climbing aboard my trusty pushbike and peddling off to Mr A. 'Twill be a bit traumatic because it's just outside the city limits and I seldom go across international boundaries into Suburbia, but needs must when the Devil calls.
I'm off to smack some credit on my A*D* phone and I normally go no further than the Customer Services desk. The place is the size of an aircraft hanger and I get a bit overwhelmed and bolt back down to something compact like L!dl.
So, expert shoppers, can you tell me what is hot and what is not at Mr A's? I'll be checking in at 3 pm-ish after work and before shopping to see if you lovely peeps have shared some top tips.
Thanks, GQ xxEvery increased possession loads us with a new weariness.

yep my 50p per mile barely covers my costs - let alone makes a profit - perhaps years ago when the rate was set but not now. I also don't get paid expenses to get to work - only additional miles that I drive after I get there. Its actually got to the point where several people in my job have stopped using their cars for work miles and get the bus - where you at least can claim the full cost of the fare you pay - the only down side being that its much less efficient as everything takes so muhc longer.People seem not to see that their opinion of the world is also a confession of character.

The homemade burgers, rolls, wedges and dip went down really well last night so need to figure out what I'm making for tomorrows tea and get that organised today.

many many years ago--we are talking about 1983 i used to get 30p a mile for a small car from my company and petrol was about ??? little because it was in gallons!--that was a rate calculated by BT who ran a large fleet of vehicules and knew what the real cost of mileage was from their well kept stastics--i hate to think what inflation has raised 30p to now!
i am trying to escape from the all consuming financial gloom i am feeling from the uk.i spend most of my day watching this site and the stocks and it is having an effect on my general outlook on life. However, it really doesnt in reality totally control my finances because most of my income and assets are out of the EU and in a reality prosperous economy--its a hard habit to break though!mfw'11 No68- 55k mortgage İO--little to nothing saved! i must do better.0
