:rotfl: There weren't actually any flames just a LOT of smoke - I was in the process of unplugging it to lob it out the door when he got to me and pointed out my error
Sorry to hear about your Dad, the role reversal of age is a tricky one to deal with for all of us xxxPiglet

My word, you lot can talk :rotfl::rotfl:
Brande- sorry I couldn't get back to you earlier - IIRC the proportion of cold tea to apple juice is 1/2 pint tea to 1 gallon juice. That being said, we usually make turbo cider which is made from commercial apple juice. I find you need to put a bit of cooking apple juice in at the beginning - partly for 'bouquet', partly for the acid. it does depend on the original quality of the juice though.
We do have access to a supply of apples but crushing them is hard work and I don't have access to a press ATM - but I have seen some excellent resources on t'internet about making your own presses with car jacks and the like.
Re the temperature thing - its more important for the temperature to be stable. Its major fluctuations that cause the problem. I keep mine in the coal shed.A garage should be more than adequate provided you don't have a source of heat in there. To get sparkle you need to have sufficient sugar left in the cider, and a little bit of warmth for a few days, so the yeast can do its work. Then put it somewhere cool to slow the yeast right down. Sometimes - if you are very lucky - you can get a secondary 'malic acid' fermentation in the spring as the weather warms up - but I've never kept cider that long....:o
Another one here who will not run electrical appliances during the night - I have also had the painful experience of a washing machine leak - so if I am going out, I try and make sure everything is turned off.
Back to play catch up - see you later
Freda xSMILE....they will wonder what you are up to...........;)0 -

Nuala, lovely to see you back. Sorry to hear about your hand - DH has had op for carpal tunnel and it still isn't right. However, he is very pleased as he has just bought a powerball gyroscope which is a plastic ball with a gyroscope in it
(bet you wouldn't have guessed, huh?) that you turn in your hand - it's a weird sensation, but it's for athletes to increase their muscletone in their arms apparently, and a byproduct of the technology is that it is BRILLIANT for carpal tunnel. DH's consultant recommended he get one if he wanted to avoid a second operation, and DH has had his first week where he hasn't woken up with pins and needles or pain in YEARS. He bought it either on Amazon or Ebay (he just told me helpfully) and his cost about £20 because he got one with a rev counter in it (where is the rolleyes smilie when you need it? Or the shotgun, for that matter?) but he says they start about a tenner. Anyway, he thoroughly recommends.
Redlady_1 I'm assuming you're thanking me for the seeds: if so you're welcome!
I was going to get some broad bean seeds today because I didn't plant any in November as the ground was frozen solid. I didn't manage to find any but on the way home from the farm, we went past one of the cottages and there was a stand outside where the woman was selling 12 broad bean PLANTS for £1.50.
So I bought a tray. Cheaper than seeds and she provides the compost!0 -
