Not being funny, but I don't know of anyone that buys petrol from Asda. It has a reputation as being substandard when compared to other major suppliers. For what is involved financially, I would not wish to use that quality of petrol. I actually refuse to use any supermarket for petrol.
As for having a problem with cards - why don't people carry cash around with them? I very rarely use my cards, preferring to use cash which I draw out once a week.
Apart from your word, what is the source of that reputation? It all comes from the same refinery, the only time I have ever known a problem was Tesco when they had contaminated fuel in the south east in 2007.
All petrol and diesel sold in the UK must meet set standards, and what you may also not realise is all the major supermarkets have swap agreements. You may see the retailer's livery on the delivery tanker, however it is often delivered by the same companies using the same petrol who service the other forecourts you will visit instead of the supermarkets.
No idea why your suggestion to carry cash is relevant to this topic. You cannot use cash at self service only pumps. Far from finding your post funny it seems to be a bit derogatory.0 -

Why do people come out with this rubbish, it does indeed come from the same refinery, I don`t live too far from it and often see all the various tankers going in and coming out of there.
Unfortunately, we do not have any manned 24 hour pumps in my area, hence the use of pay at he pump and the need for a debit/credit card.:pB&SC No. 298

the only issue may be the number of additives a company adds to it's fuel.....all of which add to the price!
As it happens, a test conducted by a well known engine tuning company found that Tesco's brand of 98 octane fuel gave the best performances by their criteria...ie power , economy and engine wear.
go for it, Asda.....sorry I don't use your petrol....seeing as Morrison's and Tesco's are quite a bit nearer to me....
and thank you for persevering, CitySlickerNo, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
I doubt many high performance car manufacturers actually recommend Asda petrol for their cars!
I doubt many car manufacturers actually don't recommend ASDA fuel....high performance or not.You only have to read the operating instructions for your car which will tell you which product to use for that particular brand and model.
If sold worldwide, the usual recommendation for fuel is minimum octane rating...plus the relevant standard.
For normal motoring within the law, I doubt many would even recognise any difference.
Given the average length of time owners keep cars bought new, I doubt many would even care what levels of wear their engines displayed.
The fact is, supermarket fuel is adequate for the job of keeping us mobile, at prices we can afford.
Otherwise they wouldn't sell so much. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
can't add anything to that - you are perfectly correct. That is why I would never buy a second hand car! You have no idea what idiot has done to it in its most delicate years.
I think most people on this particular forum are unlikely to buy a new one.
Like any purchase, new or second-hand....the final analysis is 'buyer beware'...
As with houses, cars bought 2nd-hand really needs a certain amount of inside knowledge of the subject.[or, access to someone else's knowledge?].....to avoid buying a pig-in-a-poke.
As with anything else, there has to be a certain acceptance on behalf of a potential buyer, of the fact that wear and tear, abuse, etc will be present.
What the buyer needs to consider is, whether any such wear or abuse is within acceptable boundaries?
I would never buy a new car......ever again.
Because I find that nothing is ever perfect in this world, and manufacturers especially are more interested in avoiding their responsibilities to a customer than anything else.
This is a sad reflection of the times we live in.
Far better to have let someone else endure all the hassle, by buying 2nd-hand.
Far better to allow someone else to take the financial hit that market forces present?
[if market forces are deemed the governing effect on the market, then if a car, for example,loses half it's purchase price [value??] in depreciation during the first year or so...then is it not over-priced in the first place?}
The biggest issue facing a purchaser these days is ignorance of the subject.
Much advice is proffered under the umbrella of 'professionalism', which, in reality, isn't aimed at assisting the individual to achieve peace of mind, or to follow the appropriate path....but to advance or promote that professional's own interests.
Especially regarding cars.........and most definitely regarding Bankruptcy.
which is why we have this particular forum. No, I don't think all other drivers are idiots......but some are determined to change my mind.......0 -
Redbu, I think we need to agree on a couple of points and agree to disagree on others.
We seem to be in agreement the base product coming out of a refinery is the same. We agree the only difference of petrol is the additives. I would argue by definition this does not make some petrol poorer quality or not, it simply means some retailers add in extras which you I am sure will say you prefer.
You seem to be on the fence about all the main retailers having swap agreements.
We will have to disagree about the need to carry cards and the availability of petrol. In most large towns and cities there are significant levels of self service pumps. In some areas the closest station will be a self service pump which will not accept cash. This thread is not an argument about whether people should or should not use their card. It is an argument that the card in question is a Visa Debit card that should work but won't as it is being treated as an Electron card.
Then there are some points which I find a bit antagonistic, which I say with respect to you. It is not appropriate for me to say what you should and shouldn't be posting, but it seems clear you have joined this thread with absolutely no interest in the topic. You have put comments in that seem to be vying a little bit for a scrap, I do not know if this is intentional or you do not realise it, but they are not helpful to this thread.
I started this thread for one reason only. To allow Cashminder card users to have their cards reclassified as Visa Debit in relation to Asda self service petrol stations. If you have a genuine interest in this specific topic I welcome your interest. If you have just joined the thread to have a scrap I would ask you please don't; I have put in a fair amount of work to this matter for the benefit of all Cashminder customers and that work is nearly set to pay off.0 -
Well said CS, sorry to say I was getting sucked in there:o
Back to the original topic, I have just received another email from Asda,
unbelievably it is an exact copy of the one that they sent on the 3/4/11.:pB&SC No. 298
