I detest Asda almost as much as I detest Barclays so do not shop with them anymore. I had occasion to complain to them at christmas time as they let me down with my online christmas shop and got a totally crap response, similar to that one above which was asically tough luck love we are not bothered.

As an aside the other week went to Morrisons to get diesel and the pay at pump thing said it accepts Visa debit and electron so we thought we would be ok, we were not, it said it wouldn't accept our type of card, so we backed up and went elsewhere.

Hi Ive just had this reply from Asda,

Thank you for taking the time to email ASDA.
I'm sorry to learn of the problems you have had whilst using your local store petrol station. This is not the shopping experience we want for any of our customers when using our services and facilities.
At present my petrol trading team are unaware of any issues regarding payment in our petrol station, I have passed your comments to my team to look into what went wrong and if need be correct for the future.
May I advise if this occurs again speak to the petrol manager at the store, who'll be able to help you and advise you further.
Thank you once again for taking the time to email ASDA and If you require any further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
    Kind Regards

This is my 2nd reply from Asda:

    Good Afternoon Donna,

Thank you for emailing me about the problems you've had when trying to use your Co-Operative Bank 'Cashminder' card,

I have email our Petrol Team who have advised the following.

our self service petrol pumps do require a pre-authorisation and this is a security check that we have in place (as these sites are not manned by a colleague) therefore it is for both our and the customers protection.

It is also true that certain cards do not allow the re-authorisation process, this is not something we can specifically help. However if a card scheme has changed their rules on their cards and have changed the card 'type' we would expect those cards to either be re-issued with a different card number, or the card scheme to notify us of these changes. It could be we have either not had this communication, or this is something that we have missed.

I will happily pick this up with our Petrol Vendor in order to check this out, but I will need the first 6 digits of the customers new card in order to check with them what our acceptance should be.

Thank you for contacting me please let me know if I can help with anything else.

    Kind Regards

  • This is really interesting, three different responses so far.

From two of them (including mine) I think we now know Asda's petrol trading team will get to know about the issue.

From diddly74 this is the most interesting response. Diddly - have you emailed them with the six digits of the card that relates to your query? I know one of the most common ones begin 4508 xx and there are others. Perhaps you could ask if they will open talks with Co-Op as well when you email them back?

I get the impression we could see some change from this if we keep the communication going with Asda. It is fair comment to say Asda's loss by not being able to buy petrol there, but certainly in my area they are the cheapest vendor and my partner would like to use them.

I will post back any subsequent replies I get, thanks for everyone's involvement so far as I know a lot of people are interested in this.

Here is my email from Asda, received at 5.20pm. It is the same as diddly in post no.27

I have sent her the 6 digits from my card that she has asked for, my card begins 450875.

  • Dojoman - I am pleased with your response as it is exactly the same as diddly74's from the same person, now we know there is at least one person at Asda who is aware of a campaign to change their policy.

Perhaps the next person to reply to Asda could include a link to this thread for them to be aware of? There has been 641 views of this thread since it was started only four days ago, perhaps if this was brought to their attention they can see a real business interest in updating their pumps and allowing Cashminder card holders to use the pumps.

Also if Asda does become aware of this thread, they might want to bear in mind the holders of Cashminder accounts are a significant niche. There are plenty of people with this account who cannot have any other sort of bank account so do not have the freedom to change banks, so holders of this account cannot just change banks for a better card.
