so you cannot buy a bag of sweets and put them in your cabin bag, because that would mean you had 2 bags, is this correct?
No, as already said you can stuff as many bags into one bag as you like because you are still carrying one bag. I was reponding to the post from the person who said she put them inside each other until she was round the corner and then took it out.

Well yes I would need to take my handbag out really in order to access purse, phone, hairbrush etc ... however I do put it back in the holdall when going to the boarding gate ;)

I got this from the Easyjet T&Cs:

Conditions of Carriage Articles 8.1 and 9
Save where the limits set locally are more restrictive, passengers are permitted one standard piece of hand baggage to a volume limit of 56x45x25cm (including wheels and pockets) (“Standard Hand Baggage”). It must fit without force into the gauges provided at check-in or departure gates. No weight restriction applies within reasonable limits — i.e. a passenger must be able to place the piece of luggage safely in the overhead storage bins without assistance.
In addition to the “Standard Hand Baggage” you may also carry:
    (a) one of the following: An overcoat; an umbrella, or a shawl; and
    (b) one standard size carrier bag of goods purchased from the departure airport.

I don't understand why easyjet/ryanair are so strict about laptop bags being treated as 1 hand luggage bag. They can always fit under the seat, so surely that space should be utilised instead of serving no purpose. Also, I always keep it on my shoulder, so techically I am wearing it and not carrying/pulling it with my hands like a suitcase, which goes into the locker. I never put it in the lockers as it could get bashed about during takeoff/landing. If you were to wear it over your shoulder, and have a big coat over it would they really stop you? It seems very petty.

don't you have to take your coat off to go through security though?

Ah but thats not at the departure gate is it, I see what you mean. I have been stoppped at the gate by Easyjet staff and told that I must fit my handbag in my hand luggage, and they stood and watched me do it.

But if your hand luggage suitcase was already full, and you weren't able to fit the bag in your main bag then you have 2 bags, so that packet of sweets would cost you £40. A lot of the secondary airports that Ryanair uses heavily depend on the revenue from duty free sales as they have to give Ryanair super low landing fees otherwise Ryanair will throw a tantrum and pack their bags. If people won't purchase a bottle of whisky/perfume/oversized chocolate bar due to Ryanair's restrictions then airports will have to increase landing charges to make up for lost revenue. In turn this will lead to higher fares, or Ryanair just clearing off entirely to another airport 100 miles away from the intended destination.

As far as I'm aware, the Ryanair hand luggage police are not present at security screening.

I was behind a woman on a Ryanair flight when she was surprised to discover her one piece of hand luggage was over the 10kg limit.

She had had it weighed earlier and it was okay.
The staff asked if she had bought anything prior to boarding and it turned out she had bought a couple of magazines, which having stuffed them into the bag, and taken it over the limit.
She took the mags out, gave them to her husband and the bag was reweighed and it was fine.

How pedantic! The plane would have weighed exactly the same if the woman had carried the magazines herself. All they achieved was delaying people sitting down and the plane taking off (and the constant hard selling of scratch cards/smokeless cigarettes).

I suspect they were being helpful in this case (no pun intended) as their boss might have been keen for them to extract some money from the woman.

The plane was not delayed as it took off on time.
