    Hi

I have now searched on Google and have found some information on other websites which seem to mention the self imposed sanction period following the end of the most recent employment. This seems to support what i thought initially when i made the original post.

    very confusing :(

You can't just quote some random MSE poster as proof positive of something; in the thread you quoted from everybody else said exactly the opposite, just as they have here.
    .
There is no such thing as a self imposed sanction, any sanction will date from the first point that you signed on.

I am perplexed as to why the OP has not simply called the DWP and asked.

    Hi,

I have never quoted anyone directly. However, the username that pops up with the same advice has been posting it since 2009 on MSE forum.

Thank you to everyone for replying.

I haven't checked the links but I think it is me that is being quoted.

    I am absolutely correct.

A sanction period is decided and the number of days between the employment ending and the claim starting for which the claimant would be entitled to JSA but for the lack of a claim are deducted

having realised the time, I appreciate it is unlikely anyone is around so I will begin by posting the freely available decision maker's guide, from which a quotation is provided:

    http://www.dwp.gov.uk/docs/dmgch34.pdf
Days to be deducted from the sanction period
34051 For leaving voluntarily and misconduct cases, once the DM has chosen the period of sanction, it should be reduced by any days

    1.
which fall after the date on which the employment ended (see DMG 26038) and
    2.
which fall before the period of sanction starts (see DMG 34054 - 34058) and
    3.
for which claimants do not receive any JSA because they
3.1 do not claim it or

    3.2 claim it late or
3.3 are in other employment or training1 or
3.4 are reinstated in the former employment or training2 or
3.5 are incapable of work3 or
3.6 are not available for work or
    3.7 are not ASE or
3.8 do not have a JSAg or
3.9 are imprisoned or detained in legal custody or
3.10 receive SMP for a period after their employment has ended or
    3.11 are abroad or
3.12 have failed to attend or failed to provide a signed declaration without good cause (see DMG Chapter 20) or
3.13 have income that exceeds the applicable amount or
3.14 have capital in excess of the maximum allowed or
3.15 are in receipt of young person's bridging allowance (Wales only).
Note: If after the reduction the sanction period is nil, the DM should decide not to sanction.
